Ohio’s new license plate: What do you think?

Gov. John Kasich today unveiled Ohio’s new license plate, which was designed by a student at the Columbus College of Art and Design.

The news release notes that it will be harder to counterfeit, with additional “security features, markings, and other federal requirements making it harder to illegally counterfeit.” The last plate redesign was in 2009, when the ‘Beautiful Ohio’ plate debuted; it became the state’s default plate in June, 2010.

“The new licenses and identification cards will be distinctly different in design from the traditional license,” said Mike Rankin, Bureau of Motor Vehicles Registrar.

Driver licenses will be released in January of 2013 and the new plates will be available December 2012.

Next: You can pick the slogan that will appear on the plates. Some odd choices on the list: “Ohio Burgee;” ”Glacier Grooves,” and “40,948 square miles,” for example.

Here’s what it looks like:

UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.

Robert Grove, a Columbia Twp. resident with 40 years of graphic design experience, suggested this tweaked version. He would add a red triangle at the bottom, mirroring the top one:

many of you know that i'm a license plate hobbyist. i currently have 58 different (mostly) plates hanging around my apartment. so believe me when i tell you that i know a thing or two about a thing or two regarding license plates. these new ones suck. better than the beautiful ohio plates, but not by much. too much noise in the background. if the triangles were blue, the background red, and the lettering/numbering white, that'd be sweet i think
These will be effectively counterfeited within the first 5 minutes of their release.

I don't like it. About as ugly as those red, white, and blue bicentennial plates.
Wow, do you think it would ever occur to anyone in Columbus to use a student from the world's finest design school at the University of Cincinnati?
Ohio has probably the worst license plates in the country. Terrible.

I like your idea better - yeah those suck.
I realize that looking at it up close is much different than seeing it on a car, but from a computer viewing perspective it hurts my eyes. Upon further review, I dislike this even more. This is a hot mess, and we're going to have to be looking at these things for years to come.

About as attractive as a computer printout.

I'd like to know who picked this and what the process was. Was this a contest open to everyone? If so, where are the other entries, or were they even uglier?
Is there a big problem with counterfeiting license plates?
BR, as I understand it, it wasn't a problem until the state decided to get rid of the metal plates.
When OH got rid of the metal stamped plates and went to a flat sheet the plates became very easy to counterfeit with today's technology.
Stamping is much harder for the average counterfitter to replicate.

word. former gov. strickland's wife designed the beautiful ohio atrocity. i have a sweet design for an ohio plate, but i'm a crap drawer. essentially it's the top half of the moon at the bottom of the plate with the identification numbers overlapping. ohio looming large at the top in white surrounded by the void of space (with a few distant stars). that oughta shut those carolina folks up.
