Sources say he was a t Shula's last night........and staying at the Winfrey. HMMMM
I heard a plan flew out to Cookeville Tennessee last night.

Anyone here about this?
"sources"?
Charles Barkley.
I think you mean Gnarls Barkley.
I have a friend that parks cars at the winfrey says he saw him everyone there talking about it.
Just passing thru. He is heading down to Boca Raton to interview.
Turner Gill is a [somewhat] interesting candidate. He did a very good job @ Buffalo. not so @ Kansas.
How much of this can be attributed to Kansas and following after the Mangino incident?
He's [relatively] young (49) and has name recognition, which could be a plus.

fwiw, before we go calling for Mangino, he only had one good and one great season at KU.
Honestly, I think we need a guy from this region.

I consider John Neal a guy from this region due to his experience at UAB.

There are 2 others that I would also consider "this region" guys that we should also consider.

No, neither of them are the Georgia Southern head coach.
whoever we hire is gonna have to hit ALL the local/State high schools, if for no other reason than to tell
those coaches there's a new sheriff in town. He'll need to establish relationships. then, ask them to wipe the slate clean
on everything they think they know in regards to UAB football. he'll need to erect a wall around the State line and attempt
to keep the l'vile's, usm's, um's, marshall's...out. he'll need to continue to cultivate ATL, and to a lesser extent lower GA.
making inroads into FL would be good, too

don't get me wrong. Gill wasn't a consistent winner at Buffalo, with only one winning season from four. We need a proven winner. He isn't it.
I think Turner Gill is an intriguing candidate. I'm not sure he's the best fit though, considering the areas of the country where the bulk of his recruiting contacts are established. What are Kansas football fans saying about his firing? 2 years isn't really a fair amount of time to judge him as it typically takes a coach a year to foster new HS coach relationships.

All of these that you list are good reasons to hire someone with instant name recognition from the beginning. UAB may have such name recognition in some of these areas, but it wouldn't hurt to have our name boosted by the name of the head coach. Remember, it won't be the FBHC visiting in person at every school but his assistants who will depend upon that name for immediate entry credibility. It will also boost our program's credibility among those who may wish to question it in competition for recruits.

exactly. imo, we don't have the time for a Neal type to generate excitement, gradually increase attendance and add additional revenue.
This hire has to be for TODAY. We have to energize the City and State, not just the current UAB fan-base.
Dear Lord, let this be over soon.
Rick Neuhiesel was eating at the old OT's in Lakeview a week before Callaway was hired... saw him with my own two eyes.

The Turner Gill thing is the same deal... just a coincidence.
Turner Gill is not what Mackin described in his letter and to the press.
I saw Hulk Hogan in the airport.
does he coach football?

John Neal is a California native who played at/graduated from BYU, and he's spent more years coaching in the West Coast (Oregon State, Pacific, Oregon) than he has in the deep south (ETSU, Ole Miss, UAB).

He's still a worthy candidate, but he's not 'from' the UAB region by any stretch of the imagination.
