Full Version: Blake Bortles to take over as starter?

I have been thinking that he looked better then Jeff Godfrey and was in during clutch times of the last free games. I envision Blake as the starter and main QB with Jeff as a wildcat type relief starting next season. What do you guys think?

No link, just my thoughts.

Timbo out
Class 95
Timbo, I've been mulling this over all season. Here's my conclusion.

What would Godfrey's running game been like had he been given a better offensive line play selection? Both quarterbacks have their strengths and weaknesses, it's just that Godfrey's weaknesses were exposed by the pass heavy offense. He's not accurate beyond 15 or 20 yards. The threat is still there, but not really.

Don't get me wrong, I'm of the opinion whoever is doing better should get the starting call. We can't afford lapses of more than one down if we are going to play in the Big East, especially with our OOC schedule next year.

This is why we need BOTH quarterbacks, in a new playcalling style that utilizes both quarterbacks on the same play.

-Bortles is tall, with a large build, and has running ability (to the extent that Godfrey has passing ability). Hit the weights a bit, practice with the FB's and TE's and bam you have a blocker on every play, or a potential passing target.

-Godfrey is fast, nimble, and clutch when it matters. He's a natural running back, and he has a short passing threat. Bam running, catching, throwing threat.

Line them up, split back (make sure the center is specialized) with "Wild-Knight" potential.

-Standard play formation: 5 O-linemen (emphasis on run blocking versus pocket protection) and both QB's. You can have a 4 WR package, 2 TE / 2 TB package, a combination of the two... etc.

What would you do as a DC against this type of playstyle? What could you possibly do? If you blitz to try and stop the run, there are so many passing options you will get beat every time. If you protect against the run, with many people on the line, you leave it open deep. If you spread yourself to try and cover all options, you will either create holes in the defense, or not move fast enough to stop the first downs. We are BLESSED with two very capable quarterbacks, and it is on Taafe to make this work. We could have the most unstoppable offense in the country if this is planned out right, and with training in the right areas.
While I don't disagree with anything you said, two headed monster have been tried in the past, and usually before its all said and done, one takes over. I really like Godfrey, but it almost seems the WR's catch the ball better off of Blakes passes. Again, just a gut feeling, but who knows. I see that Luther Campbell is saying the Knights should let Godfrey and the Miami players go since Kelley was terminated. It makes for good conservation anyways.
I hope more join in.

So According to this article, it looks as if Godfrey isn't happy and considering asking for a release. Yesterday O'Leary said that usually when two players are this close one usually asks for release. It looks to me as Godfrey is feeling slighted and won't be here next year, almost like he is giving up on beating Blake for the spot. As I said above, it looks to me that Blake is the better QB and will take over.

I'll be quite sad to see Godfrey go, but if he's not willing to work and get better for his position then he NEEDS to go. Kinda makes me wonder how Damarcus Smith is feeling right now... because technically he'd be the frontrunner over Bortles.
Think he should. You guys should post on UCFSports dot com
