Northern Illinois junior defensive end Sean Progar was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week on Monday by the league office.

Quote:Progar had four tackles, two for loss, a safety and one sack while helping the Huskies defense to one of their best performances of the season in an 18-12 win Friday against Eastern Michigan. In the second quarter, Progar tackled Eagles' running back Dominique Sherrer in the end zone for NIU's first safety of the season. On EMU's final possession, his sack dropping Eagles quarterback Alex Gillett for a 10-yard loss helped set up a 4th-and-35, ensuring EMU would need a miracle to win.

Was this the first defensive player of the week for NIU? I can't imagine any other game where a defensive player was worthy.

IIRC Newcomb won one.

Progar has a lot of talent and in my opinion can play at the next level if he keeps improving through next year.
