Arkansas State has a chance to be in the Top 25 along with NIU if they both win out, interesting that it says "likey to play the MAC runner up". Ohio State vs Ohio or NIU vs Illinois in the Pizza???

This is because ESPN is worthless and lazy and is going off of documents probably several years old that state that the Pizza gets the MAC #1 or Champ and that the Mobile bowl gets the MAC #2. These bowls have been alternating the top MAC pick for several years now and ESPN is too w&l to do 5 minutes of research to determine that the Mobile bowl has the MAC #1 this year.

When the MAC starts spelling its conference name S-E-C, ESPN may decide to give 2 sh!ts but until then this is what we get.
We decline the invite to take on a B10 team in the Detroit bowl, no?

Gotta think it depends on the money. Especially now that we're going to be paying our athletes. Gotta save every dime we can get.
The Mobile bowl has picked around us before so if Detroit is the bigger, better matchup we should take it.
Mobile Bowl could have taken us in 2005 and last season and they chose not to. Maybe they let us slide to Detroit.

I dont see any scenario that Godaddy lets NIU slide. Pack your bags ladies and gents, Mobile AL is our destination this year.
There were plenty of oppotunities in past years for the bowl to have selected us, but they seem to have preferred the Ohio teams. I see no difference this year. My guess would be the Pizza or Potato bowl.
Sadly, we'd probably get more credit for beating a mediocre Big Whatever team than if we beat a better team like Arkansas State.

Dog Fan there are 2 factors I see that make NIU a lock for Mobile, even if they lose the championship game if they get there:

1) Bowls like explosive offenses. NIU has one of the better ones in the country

2) Chandler mania is at full force, that is a huge appealing factor for the Huskies over any other MAC team.

As my daddy taught me..."askin' ain't gettin'" I think we would decline this invite should the Pizza Bowl be interested in having us. In this crappy economy, less travel expense, more fans, better game...better for the program, and better for the fans. I doubt Mobile would really want us if we brought 10 fans to the game. It just doesn't make sense for either party.
Since the 2002 season, the Mobile Bowl (since it has changed names a few times) has taken an Ohio team from the MAC 6 out of 8 years. The exceptions, CMU and Balls Tate

Very interesting, I dont know why but it never even occurred to me that NIU could deny the invitation. However, would the MAC look severely down on NIU if they did that? It seems like it would be breaking protocol to deny one of your traditional tie-ins.

The thing is that NIU would not decline an invite unless they were assured that they had another waiting in the wings. And the Pizza and Mobile bowl (from my understanding of previous dealings with one another) have a good relationship and I think there would be an unspoken deal that the Pizza would not offer NIU if Mobile wanted them. Of course this does not preclude the two bowls collaborating on a deal where the Pizza "owes one" to the Mobile bowl.

Also, I think the MAC is very active in the process and will try to create favorable matchups for all the teams that go bowling (as many as 6 seems likely with the secondary agreements). I think this is part of the reason why NIU was selected for the Idaho bowl last year, the MAC knew that it had a good shot at defeating a well-respected Fresno team and that such a victory was better for the conference than a victory over a SunBelt team in the Pizza or Mobile bowls. This is why I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an NIU invitation to the SF Bowl against probably Cal.

MAC football IS NIU and Toledo right now. Conference championship or no conference championship. I don't think this is the time for the MAC to be getting into a grudge match with one of its premier football programs the way conference realignment is going down. Not to say we have interest from any other conference, but it would make NIU's decision easier if they were being strangled by their current affiliation.

Also, I think the way the economy is right now is reason enough that the MAC should expect one of their members to go into this bowl season with a tighter leash than other years. Us trying not to lose our ass in wasted bowl money is no reason for the MAC to get pissed at us for declining a bowl invite. Financially, it makes sense to stay close to home and get as many butts in the seats as possible. Especially, if it has more appeal due to the opponent we would be playing. Mobile does not fit that plan at all.

How about NIU goes to Mobile, OU to Detroit, and Toledo to Boise03-banghead that would work out great.

Rather go to Boise than Mobile. I swear the way this bowl thing works out, Toledo will get the best bowl of any team.

Nothing against Arkansas State, but I would much rather play in Detroit or Boise. The BS that the Mobile Bowl pulled in 2005 when they chose 2nd place Toledo before the MACC was even played, still pisses me off.
I think money talks here. Pizza bowl buys the rights to NIU from godaddy which will set up a NIU vs. Northwestern/Illinois game. It makes sense to do it this way.
