I do not know how to get the article and i dont have time to type out the whole thing about what the editorial board said in todays paper about NIU Athletics, but i was shocked. They basically bashed the football team and all athletes. If anyone has twitter you can see what football players think about it. I now know why many of you hate the Northern Star. I will try to find the article from todays paper if not maybe you guys can go on their website and read it on page 6 of todays paper

I've already written a response in the comments.

EDIT: Just to be clear it doesn't bash the football team or the athletes. Not sure where he got that. It was arguing the return on investment in athletics isn't worth it. Obviously, thats BS....we are all living proof. Alumni stay connected with their school because of athletics...freshman applications up....etc.
It's straight up cowardice they don't attach anybody's name to articles like these. A joke.

They don't see the long-term benefits of an IPF? A joke.
Whatever your feelings are about sports or not, the article is just a bad article. All of the money used for the IPF and Yordon Center is funded from donoros. It's not like the University is spending government money on it.
Quote:According to the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education, NIU's total varsity student athletes for the 2010 academic year totaled 439. According to a May 3 Northern Star article, NIU's total enrollment for fall 2010 sat at 23,850. Based on this data, about 2 percent of NIU's 2010 student population would regularly use the indoor training facility.

I feel the same way....... about the Music Building, the Engineering Building, and the Physics Building, which I never used.

But I realized, as do all non-Northern Star reporters not trying to be confrontational and edgy, that the University has a myriad of special use buildings that many, if not most, students will never use, set foot in, and realisitically not even know exist. Seriously, Davis Hall? Still Gym?

I eagerly await the editorial condemming the Barsema Hall as a poor use of funds because only Business students use the Hall.
PRIVATE MONEY ASS-HOLE... blame the donors
So sick of the NS not supporting Huskie Athletics. It IS possible to have both academics and athletics! It is possible to do them both very well. If the NS does not realize that admissions are correlated to how well athletics does, then they are idiots. I see people wearing their school colors all over this nation, not one of them are wearing to show off their GPA standards (Yale, Harvard, MIT excluded). You don’t get 80,000 people outside the math building chanting and screaming fight songs, this happens in football stadiums and basketball arena’s, around athletics. Strong academics and athletics will breed school spirit, which will in turn rejuvenate admissions every year. When we cheer for our Huskies, we cheer for the collective University, which includes our students, academics, teams, and self being. I am a Huskie with a NIU degree! Very proud and everyone I work with and deal with knows it.
If you want names on these, just look at the editors. They are listed in every issue.

Well said.04-cheers
I'm just sick of the northern star always reporting on false facts, or just not knowing the facts at all. Happens pretty often. I guess that's what happens though when your job is just to BS a paper every day....
How long does it take to a comment to be approved? Ironic the paper feels the need to censor comments...

NIU could win a BSC berth, win the game, enrollment up 8,000 next year, the NS would find something negative to write. To me they are always want to drag us down, never build the University Athletics up. I know freedom of the press, but this is total BS, has to stop. Tomorrows headlines in the NS, THERE IS NO SANTA CLAUS! EASTER BUNNY DEAD. ATHLETICS EVIL.
I got it, Mike Korcek should take over the NS! Then entire deal. I know he is in retirement, but this would be sweet. Whip that place into shape.
I just sent a letter to the editor. Hopefully it was written well. I was pretty angry and baffled at the stupidity so my writing may have suffered.
When I say "I went to Northern Illinois University", 95% of the people say "Oh Michael Turner went there" or "Garrett Wolfe went there", and although these guys might have been excellent students in the classroom, I'm pretty sure people don't know these guys because they wrote a great speeches in COMS101, they know them because what they did on the football field. The NIU football team is the best marketing that NIU has. These idiots at the NS need to transfer to some online university that doesn't have an athletic program if they are so upset about it. Write a real story for once, talk about how student athetes get up at 5am while the rest of the university is coming in drunk from the night before, of how guys are spending time in the community helping out. I can tell you where some firework money would be well spent....right up the @$$ of the person who wrote this article.

I've posted many times where they never approve my comments. I don't bother trying anymore.

Wow. I sent them a letter asking how long it takes the censorship committee to approve comments. HAHA. May not have helped my cause but whatever!

Your comment wont be posted if it doesnt support the opinion of the paper. There was this problem last year when no opinions supporting athletics were posted, only responses supporting them were allowed.

Cowardice on a couple of fronts, first no name like you mention, second, its written before students clear out for the break. Although does a name really need to be attached, its been pretty obvious ever since I went to school there that this is how the paper feels about athletics. I hope those that called me crazy for thinking this are starting to realize perhaps the NS does not support NIU athletics.
Well to me, All funding for the northern star should be cut as less than 1% of the students probably read that paper. FYI, papers are dying...See Chicago Tribune and Chicago Suntimes.
