The East is deep as it usually is but Kent looks to take the top spot. After Kent its really up for grabs in the East.

The West will also be a battle, the division is out for the taking.

Here are my predictions:

#2 Miami OH
#3 Ohio
#4 Akron
#5 Buffalo
#6 Bowling Green

West
#1 Western Michigan
#2 Central Michigan
#3 Ball State
#4 Northern Illinois
#5 Eastern Michigan
#6 Toledo

Whats your predictions for the season? 04-cheers

College Basketball Preview 2011-2012
EMU could finish last in the MAC West this year and begin the big ascent next year (with 3 nice transferrs sitting out this year).
I'll predict BG will not do worse than 5th in the East.

Geesch. I’m all for waiting for next year, but before tip off?

Besides, we don’t know what other recruits will make a difference in 2012-13. It’s not like the MAC is waiting around for EMU’s “big ascent."

I think BG is going to have a good season, but the reality is someone is going to have to finish fifth and sixth in the East. Everyone here is saying they expect big things from Kent, Akron, Ohio, Miami, Buffalo and BG well regardless someone has to finish last.. However, last in the East might still be the #7 or #8 seed in the conference tournament.
Here is how I see the MAC.
East
1. Kent st
2. Buffalo
3. Akron
4. Miami
5. Ohio
6. BGSU

West
1. Ball State
2. CMU
3. WMU
4. EMU
5. Toledo
6. NIU

Wow, the chimps over WMU? Do you watch MAC basketball? I would love to hear your reasoning for that one....

I mean I get Ball State, but the chimps?

Coach M took over a high school team in Detroit which was very, very bad.

First year went winless.

A few years later became state champions.

I'm guessing is that EMU will not go 8 wins, 11 wins, 9 wins, 12 wins, etc. (that kind of mediocrity over a series of years).

Coach M will build a very strong program but as he lost Bowdrey and his 3 main recruits are D-I transfers from 'Cuse, Arkansas, and Wyoming significant help is on the way NEXT year.

P.S. we have a new coach and the first year can be rough. Ala EMU FB (2009), Toledo hoops, (probably) NIU hoops this year, etc.
Kent has a first year coach, too.

John, you worry me. get professional help!
Id be pretty shocked to see Ohio at 5 but you never know.
Really, Western picked Third!!!! I want to buy what your smoking....
Here is my concern about Ohio. The post defense is a huge question mark and those teams ahead of us have absolute studs inside. Devaughn Washington was our best inside defender and I think he will be missed a lot more than people think especially on the defensive end. Marshall is becoming a dominating player for Akron and I just love Mcrae at UB. He reminds me of Trent. Kent St is loaded. BGSU isn't a cupcake either.

I like CMU and almost put them first. Zeiglar is gonna be a contender for player of the year with McCrae of UB. CMU was very young last year and typically players make big jumps between freshmen and sophmore years. CMU has huge upside and I think they will be a real force come March. Ball State with Jones is the difference. WMU is good, but its the stars that make the big baskets that decide games.

Wow. You really don't watch MAC basketball. You almost put the chimps first?!? What a joke.

In the West, I think it's safe to say that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be some combination of WMU, CMU, and BSU. Right now I'd put CMU at 3rd, due to the fact that Ziegler hasn't proven to be a very good coach. However, CMU may have enough talent on the squad to overcome Ziegler's shortcomings. Trey, Jackson, and the fresman McBroom should be one of the better backcourts in the conference this year. CMU's frontcourt is woefully thin though. Coimbra and Mbaigato should start, with Voss off the bench. After that there's not a whole lot there. At this point I wouldn't put CMU at first but I think they have a legit shot at it. CMU will certainly be better than you're giving them credit for right now.
East
1. Kent st
2. Buffalo
3. Ohio
4. Akron
5. Miami
6. BGSU

West

2. BSU
3. CMU
4. Toledo
5. NIU
6. EMU

The ranking doesnt even really matter in the East. Last year for example, Buffalo finished 5th in the East and still won 20 games and went to a post season tourney...

BG is not a bad team by any means, but I dont think they are better than the other 5 teams in the East. In fact I would be somewhat shocked if BG didnt win at least 14-15 games - their problem is that the East is stacked more than any other year than I can think of in the past 5 years. And call me crazy, but outside of Muvunga, I dont think Miami matches up well with the other teams.

I do think that Kent is the class of the MAC, but I dont think their unbeatable either.
I predict a long year for NIU that will lower the Conferences RPI.
Watch out in 2013/2014

i agree with you.
A pretty safe bet that no MAC team is "unbeatable" since no MAC team has ever been "unbeatable." Best is KSU in 2002 at 17-1, iirc.
Not talked to one KSU fan who thinks we’re unbeatable. Pretty damn good, yes. But pretty damn good describes at least two other teams in the MAC East.
