First off I would like to say thank you for all the good you have done for the great city of Birmingham. I have been a strong supporter of yours since you became mayor of this great city. You have brought more forward thinking and economic development to this city, than anyone else in the metro area. But, I am very disappointed in your comments about UAB not having an on campus stadium, as being a wash for the city. This would be huge for the entire city. You would have a tsunami of investment in this University and the surrounding area that it would be the single biggest economic project for Birmingham in recent memory. The economic impact of this for the city and the simple fact that people would eventually tailgate and stay in Birmingham instead of Tuscaloosa is the reason this was shot down in such a shady way. Legion field is too far away from campus to be a permanent home for UAB. When UAB finally gets a winning coach and a home of their own, there will be no limit to the success of this football team and University. Your real supporters are right here in Birmingham so I ask you to get behind us and we will continue to support you.

Thank you for your time,

I ask everyone to email him at this address william.bell@birminghamal.gov

IMO he is the person we need to stir up support more than anyone else. He is the mayor of the city. He will be worried about votes and his loyalty is strictly to Birmingham not Tuscaloosa. It doesnt matter what your writing skills are( mine aren't too great) just send him an email or call. With enough emails and phone calls from his constituents he will be our greatest asset in this fight. Feel free to stroke the ego a little bit!

FREE UAB
Not to mention how, with it bookending Railroad Park with the baseball park, would have fundamentally changed downtown for the better.

Yep, Billy.

PBJ didn't just screw UAB. He screwed you, too. Now, what are you going to do about it?
Will the Bell will probably be taking the sandwich and beer handouts from Bama at their games , since he is a publicly declared big time fan of the Tide. I dont see him truly getting behind us on this, otherwise his words would be much stronger in our behalf. As Smaug says, just my 0.02centavos worth.
Done.
Done.
Done and one to the Governor. I understand that a few letters/emails can be ignored, but if enough are sent, they will get the message that people (voters) are very upset about this and that may force them into helping when they want to sit on the side.
In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if Bell's actually licking his chops. You know now that this has happened, the dome stadium talk is going to kick back up again.
Done.

That's kind of what I was afraid of.

Who cares if a stadium is put next to UAB in the proposed OCS spot. I would be willing to make a concession if it got us a permanent home. I would want grass though. Maybe we could have a movable field like the stadium in Arizona

Yeah, I've got a feeling this is what the city is thinking.
Hasn't it been well documented that Bell doesn't answer emails? B'ham counselors complain all the time about his lack of email response. If we want to get through to him, I think the best way is to call.
Is there a number for him on one of these threads?

It needs to be within walking distance of the dorms. I'm prepared to dig in my heels on that point. And it's a bit of a hike to the Civic Center.

That's what I said. It needs to be on campus and there just so happens to be a lot of land next to Bartow that is available.
Response:

Thank you for your email. Mayor Bell's comments were taken out of context. That was not what he said, he stated that he was very disappointed that the stadium wouldn't be here. He actually agrees with what you have stated, as far as it being a economical advancement for the City of Birmingham. If UAB played at Legion Field or at their own stadium, it wouldn't cost the City any "other" monies, and that is what he meant by "wash".

Sometimes as we all may know the media doesn't report the entire conversation and I apologize for the confusion.

THAT IS PROBABLY THE NUMBER YOU GUYS COULD REACH HIM AT IF YOU WANTED TO CALL INSTEAD.
Ms. Solomon's the one I heard back from concerning the Blazeradio appearance, approval by the Mayor still pending. I've written him postally before as well, and always heard something back from either he or someone that works for him. Perhaps this forum will give him one of the places he can clear up this confusion about his alleged 'wash' statement, there are still some snakes in the Birmingham media out there, and nothing would give some of them greater pleasure than to see this movement falter or stumble by misquoting potential high-profile allies like Mayor Bell.
If I paid to have some #freeUAB postcards made and addresses pre-printed on them... would you guys be willing to send them out? I will buy the postcards but you would have to put out some $ for stamps.... Imagine if PBJ got a couple hundred post cards next week :) We could all mail on the same day!
