Here's the latest, from ESPN on SC, airing on ESPNews just now:

1. The BE plans to invite UCF, Houston and SMU as all sports, and Boise, AF and Navy as football only.

2. HOWEVER, Boise has informed the MWC that they do not plan to leave, and this is making Air Force and Navy hesitate. This is the point at which the merger went ahead today.

3. According to ESPN, UCF is up first on the block, and wants in the BE, so it is possible that UCF, SMU and Houston join, but not the others.
There is no point in even speculating and running with the latest news anymore.

It could be Villanova, East Carolina, and UCF for football who really knows at this point what the BE will pull out of its backside.

If AFA, Boise and Navy decline, the BE's AQ is dead in the long-run and we're probably better off staying in the C-MWC.
Boise might have just delivered the Big F-U to Big Least.

Well, the fact that Boise informed the MWC they are NOT leaving seems like news to me.

It seems to me IF the C-USA teams hold off, like the MWC teams seem to be doing, then the merger makes more sense.

Katz said that the merger went ahead today after Boise informed the MWC they were staying. I omitted that, and just added it back into the OP.
It's going to be funny if CUSA ends up with the last laugh at the BEast.
I'm sleptical that they "invited" schools; they wouldn't do that unless its a done deal. Remember the weekend Syracuse and Pitt left? I first heard on Saturday while watching a game when it scrolled along the bottom of the screen that they had applied to the ACC - on Sunday it was announced that they had been admitted. Of course, we are talking about the BE, but I just don't see them inviting schools unless it is a formality.
I wouldn't start laughing yet. This stuff is goofy. The BCS needs to figure out how to let all 3 conferences in, w/o costing the big boys any significant bucks, and stop all this poker playing.

The bottom dwellers all just want in. Money is secondary, at this point. Nobody wants to be left out of the club.

As long as the current 6 remain in the BE....they will be AQ. UCF will be fine moving...and...if they don't..it will be the dumbest move ever. Congrats to you guys....You deserve the bid.04-cheers

There's a pretty damn good chance they won't keep all 6 members. Once The SEC expands again their ordeal starts all over again.

I taped it and went back and listened again. The segment was titled "Big East sends invitations," but on air, they used the phrase "planned to invite." I went back and changed the OP to that phrase. I also added more detail to Point #3.

Well the Pac-10 invited Texas and Oklahoma last year before it was a done deal... so its been done before. I think the Big East was desperate enough that they invited before they got confirmation. I think Boise State stays in the MWC but we shall see.
If Boise turns down the Big East, they will get ripped to shreds by the pundits. "Boise finally had a shot at playing in a decent conference, and they turned it down, why do they deserve to ever play for a national title?"

It wouldn't be fair to Boise, I can understand why they wouldn't join the Big East on geography alone. But I do see it playing out that way if this is how it goes down.

SMH.03-banghead All they have to do is add best from CUSA and kill the merger's chance at BCS.

Actually I think most rational people would understand and respect their decision not to join. It does not make sense for them on so many levels. There are just too many unknowns with the Big East to jump through all the hoops it would take to make it happen for them.

And congratulations to them. Maybe our partners in C-USA can find enough pride to go for the win instead of forfeit.
From ESPN ticker 10/14 11:30 pm:

MERGER: MWC and CUSA agree to consolidate their FB members into a 22-team league. Merger could begin as early as 2012.

Schools will align in 2 divisions with a championship game. There has been no contact with the BCS about AQ berth for merged league.

BIG EAST: Big East invites Boise St, Air Force, UCF, SMU and Houston, but Boise State and Air Force are unlikely to join, sources tell ESPN's Andy Katz. Sources also say Boise State has indicated to MWC that it doesn't plan on leaving, and Air Force has soured on the deal since Army declined invitation and Navy is skeptical of joining.

UCF is expected to join Big East, according to sources. CUSA says it has not heard from SMU or Houston about leaving.

Boise State and Air Force are invited to football only, while SMU, Houston and UCF are invited for all sports. Big East's 6 remaining football schools won't commit to doubling exit fee to $10M unless Boise State, Air Force, Houston and SMU all agree to join.

And obviously Navy will not join unless these 4 agree to join. I think what really happened is Boise and Air Force saw how dysfunctional and inept the Big East leadership was while having tentative talks and decided to stay away from that train wreck....
