Quote:The Big East Conference will attempt a major step toward securing a football future during a Friday conference call scheduled to include a vote on dramatically increasing the exit fee for universities wishing to leave for other conferences.

A source close to the league told Sporting News the meeting will ask schools to approve a change in the league bylaws that would require a school to pay three times its annual share of league television revenue in order to depart.

Under the league’s current deal, that would raise the buyout to between $15-17 million. If the league were able to gain a TV contract even close to the one it recently declined from ESPN -- $1.4 billion over 9 years – that escape clause would become even more substantial

So, they've gone from turning down $10mil exit fees on Monday, to voting for $15-$17mil exit fees tomorrow???

Just says they will attempt it, not that anyone is onboard with it...
Louisville is not attending the meeting Friday, Take it meaning for what its worth. Louisville has already voted no. 07-coffee3
Or Louisville has voted yes, and it is a formality. 05-stirthepot
I can't see how they would pass this.
You wish.05-stirthepot

Quote:The source said Louisville may decline to participate in the call. Louisville could be a primary target for Big 12 expansion if Missouri decides to depart for the SEC but might not have any other options if the Tigers stick to their current league.

Don't they know not to call metings like these unless they already know the answer is to enact a change in a given situation? If this second meeting within days comes up a failure to raise fees, I don't know how much more egg can go on this conference's face.

Or maybe that's the idea. Maybe the perception is they can't go any lower anyway, why not call more meetings! Or shockingly, this vote would pass since reports were conflicted on if the fee vote on Monday was $10 million or $20 million. One would hope that vote on Monday was at least for $20 million.
I'm guessing there may be a compromise on this issue and they agree to raise them. This has been an issue for a week or 2 now.
One thing is for certain: the Big East has to do SOMETHING. So far, they've done plenty of nothing.
There's currently no place for Louisville and WVU to go. No offers from B12 or SEC. They need to either commit to the Big East right now, or withdraw and ask to get in C-USA, MAC or Sun Belt until they can work their way back into an AQ league 2-3 years from now. Tough position to be in, but the Big East needs to move on. It's time to **** or get off the pot.
I don't believe they will reach any consensus tomorrow or at any time before UCONN, Rutgers, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Louisville hear from The ACC, Big 10, SEC or Big 12. Can't see any of those 5 voting to increase exit fees. It will be interesting to see who else joins Louisville in not participating in the conference call.
CJ
Bet I can name two teams that will vote no.... One starts with a "V" and the other with an "L"....:)
Maybe another one too, if the ACC plays ball with them...
Something had to change, no? I'd have to believe that they wouldnt be proposing a vote to raise exit fees again, especially one that seems to be higher, if they were still right where they were 5 days ago...
Sounds like they're finally starting to show a little leadership. The old exit fee of $5MM was pretty weak. ESPN just showed Big East going after Boise State (as I'm typing this). That's the first I've seen it announced on TV.

They don't report news in college football, ESPN controls college football.

I think UofL is close to a invite. I think they have a quasi MOU agreement w/ the B12.
Does Syracuse and Pitt get to vote if they are stuck in the league for 26.245689902112 months?

You're right about ESPN not being good at actual "reporting". Instead, all they do is pick up stories from various sources and flash it on their TV networks and websites as it was their scoop.

As far as them controlling college football, I wouldn't go that far. Texas, Notre Dame, Slive, Delaney and Scott control football, not ESPN.
Quote:To change league bylaws, 75 percent of current members must vote to approve.

So, there are 14 schools to vote (Pitt and Cuse out). So, 75% of the members is 11.

8 basketball schools and 3 FB schools.

You would have to think USF and Cinci are voting yes... trying to hold this thing together. So thats 10...

Who has a shot at being #11? Rutgers? UCONN?
Of the 4 schools "looking for a home" I have to think Rutgers is the most unlikely to find one right now. I say that the 11th vote will be Rutgers. Maybe their "authrorization to explore" just found dead ends.

Well Rutgers authorized their AD to explore other conferences and UCONN has made it no secret that they would want out also. So... idk. But then again you wouldn't think that the BE would call another exit fee vote within 5 days unless they knew it would pass. Then again, this is the Big East.
