Volleyball Wins Nanook Classic Tournament
Sweeps of Alaska Fairbanks and Southwest Texas State leave WSU 6-0.

Sept. 7, 2002

FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The Washington State University volleyball team swept the field en route to the Nanook Classic tournament title at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Saturday night.

Washington State moves to a record of 6-0 with 3-0 wins over Southwest Texas State and Alaska Fairbanks Saturday and Weber State Friday night.

The Saturday night match against Southwest Texas State (3-5) was a battle royal as the Bobcats were ahead in game one 26-25 before Holly Harris's kill, Zanda Bautre's ace and Adrian Hankoff's two kills ended the game 30-26 in WSU's favor.

The second game looked to be safely in the Cougars' win column with a 25-16 lead but SWT scored seven straight points to come within three of the lead. Kills from LaToya Harris, Holly Harris and Ance Auzina allowed WSU to keep the three point margin and win the game 30-27.

Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick substituted liberally in the third game, playing all 11 players on the trip except for freshman Jen Barcus who is suffering from back pain. Still, WSU climbed to a 25-21 lead and stretched it a 30-23 win.

Against Southwest Texas State, LaToya Harris led all players with 13 kills (.344) and Holly Harris added 11 kills (.526). LaToya Harris also tallied match-high totals of three service aces, 11 digs and three blocks. The Bobcats were led with eight kills from both Rheanna Arnold and Tiffany Weidner. Weidner and Amy Ramirez each contributed 10 digs.

In the afternoon match, WSU downed Div. II University of Alaska Fairbanks 30-15, 30-20, 30-10. Chelsie Schafer led all players with 12 kills while Adrian Hankoff served a career-high six aces, Kortney Jamtaas had a career-high 20 digs, and Victoria Prince blocked a career-high six. Mallory Bergstrom led the Nanooks with 11 kills and Jamie Schanback had 14 digs. The Cougars hit .312 for the match while UAF hit -.008.

"I would feel better about being the tournament champion if we had played a better last match, it was very uninspired," Fredrick said. "It was un-fun to watch. But at the same time, I have to look at it and say everybody got to play and play quite a bit. I think we can play a whole lot better than we did tonight but you can never really please a coach. I'm excited we went three and zero and everybody got to play."

As for being on the road two weekends in a row, Fredrick commented, "I think next year we will try to play two tournaments at home instead of on the road. With the Pac-10 being as competitive as it is, it does get tough when you're on the road a lot."

In other Nanook tournament action, UAF defeated SWT 3-0, and Weber State defeated SWT 3-1. Weber State played UAF late Saturday night for second place as each had 1-1 records.

Next weekend, Washington State travels to the California Bay Molten Golden Gate Classic tournament where the Cougars will take on Butler, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, and host University of San Francisco Friday and Saturday.
