WASILLA, AK (RNN) - Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin ended months of speculation about her White House ambitions Wednesday, announcing she will not run for the Republican nomination for president.

"After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States," Palin said in a letter meant for her supporters and released to the media. "As always, my family comes first and obviously Todd and I put great consideration into family life before making this decision."

Saying her decision is "based upon a review of what common sense Conservatives and Independents have accomplished," Palin says she believes she can be more effective as a political activist, helping elect "true public servants to office."

Palin thanked supporters who urged her to run and encouraged them to stay involved in the political process.

"Know that by working together we can bring this country back – and as I've always said, one doesn't need a title to help do it," the statement read.

During a call in to radio host Mark Levin, she said she looks forward to supporting "our nominee," and shot down speculation that she would make a run for the office with a third party.

"I would assume that a third party would ensure Obama's re-election" she said.

Palin told Levin her role allowed her to speak without the shackles that might bind the opinions of a candidate.

"I need to be able to say what I want to say and hold both sides of the aisle accountable and call out the wrong-headedness of our quote-unquote 'leaders' who are leading us down this path," she said.

Palin was John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election. After an unsuccessful campaign, she returned to the governor's office to finish her term.

However, citing the extensive state and personal time and expense spent fighting "frivolous" ethics complaints, "the politics of personal destruction," and the desire to not be a lame duck governor, Palin announced on July 3, 2009 that she would not seek re-election and would resign as governor of Alaska.

After leaving office, she kept busy, starting with publishing her memoir, Going Rogue, an instant best-seller.

Palin began a political action committee, giving her official endorsement to candidates, many of them like-minded women she dubbed "mama grizzlies" who would go on to win their midterm elections.

She signed on to be a commentator on Fox News and also starred in her TLC documentary-esque series, Sarah Palin's Alaska.

Her second book, America By Heart, was released in Nov. 2010.

Her enemies will be disappointed, her friends will be relieved.
Its not news that 3 months before the first primary, that someone who has no campaign staff and has raised zero dollars is not running for President.

Her message isn't all that different than others already in the campaign.
