They actually published this today in the Northern Star

This is completely disrespectful to so many people. Completely un-called for. Does anyone have a star today that can get me the name of the author?

Found author's name in bottom. Colin Leavitt.

That's just bad.
that is messed up but so true...
I think 90% of students on campus have made the same joke.

EDIT: That's pretty bad though lol
Awful

It would be nice if the people that made this and approved it to be printed were tared and feathered by the area & Chicago media but that would only refocus the negative image back to NIU.
What we need is more political correctness in our social commentary. /s

EDIT: That said, especially with the Valentines day shooting.... I see where that is over the line. Generally, I fall on the side of commentary. I think its a bit more complicated because its a university. Its a fine line between pushing the boundaries and crossing the line.

There's a line between politically correct and just wrong. When your audience is people who lost friends/daughters/sons/classmates you don't make fun of them for that.
This crosses a line of insensitivity. 5 innocent souls were victims of a shooting rampage. I'm writing an e-mail to John Peters on this.

Horrible. Just horrible.
There is difference in making the joke among friends, where you can pick your audience, and putting that out there for the entire campus community to see. This guy is a real prick and so is the editor that allowed it to be printed. Discretion is more important than freedom of speech sometimes.
It's the responsibility of the editor to not approve something like this getting in.
Oh there's no doubt it should have never been put in the paper, but I'm not going to sit here and act like I'm outraged about it. I know you aren't either Bleeds.

And nobody was making fun of anybody for being shot or anyone that's been shot. That's just how some people see NIU. Everytime I see NIU trending on twitter I think somebody has been shot. It's not fair, but that's the label attatched to the school now.

I'm not outraged at the content, I am outraged that they printed it for the community at large to see. Use your brains when making comments like that!

It reflects very poorly on the Star that's for sure.
Somebody send this kid a death threat.

No, it is NOT true. It is disgusting and disrespectful. Free speech is one thing, but there should be a line drawn that should not be crossed. What happened to common sense and respect? The last thing we need to do is to add salt to a wound that is quite prevalent at NIU.

Playing devils advocate here, nobody is making fun of people who were shot. The point of this message is NIU has a gun violence problem with far too many being shot or shot at.

That said, I agree that it crosses the line.

But you don't keep bringing it up on a campus that's already on edge from what's been going on and has occurred in the past.

The comic is not funny and it's the ultimate in insensitvity. But, hey, just like the PigDog, it causes everyone to talk about it.

And I disagree with that statement.

I've never looked at the actual statistics, but I'd be willing to bet that other college campuses have just as much or more gun issues than NIU per year.

The way that media blows up the stories (this comic being exhibit A) is enough to make you THINK that NIU has a gun issue when compared to other universities.

My juco had 2 of my teamates murdered in a two month span!

Supports my earlier post.

In fact, I've never even seen a real gun and I went to NIU for 4 years, lived in DeKalb for 21 years.
I really hope that comic was not printed as it would be very unfortunate. Does it surprise anyone though coming from the NS?
