this realignment chatter will never end, will it?
the sad thing is if the acc gets poached, then swofford will poach the big east. if i were marrianatto i would pay him a personal visit face to face. he should take some big east coaches with him.
Maryland???
Can you guys tell how Calipari is lying?

His mouth is open.
Reminds me of a line in an old movie, "You want to find a corrupt policeman? Just call the police station. It doesn't matter who answers"...

Swofford would laugh in all their faces and tell them to f*** off, especially if Marinatto brought the BBall-only schools' coaches.

Cal probably figures it would help him recruit the DC area. I doubt he considered any other factors...

Strange, huh?

SEC has wanted a DC connection for a long, long time. That's why he mentions MD and VT.

But Maryland will never go to the SEC. It's the ACC or Big Ten for them. Which is why I always thought VT and WVU would ultimately be the two eastern teams for the SEC.

Cheers,
Neil

I used to think that as well about VPI. But I have heard some things that make me change my mind on that. Before anythign else is considered, the academic reputation of the SEC is very damaging to getting VPI, who has made serious strides in improving their academic reputation over the years.

I think the only realistic candidate for the SEC within the ACC now is probably FSU, with Clemson a distant second. The other schools they would want (UNC, Virginia, VPI, Duke, and Maryland) are way too academic-image oriented to leave the ACC for anything other than the Big Ten. And yes I really did include Duke in there.

I think you are right. But even losing FSU is a blow to the ACC. Who do they take as a replacement? USF? Miami will need another Florida school in the league. I wouldn't be upset about that IF the Noles leave but if it's the Bulls, what does that do to the academic image of the league? And how do they then justify not taking WVU or Louisville?

Cheers,
Neil

I don't know why they would need another Florida team: Miami has only been in a conference with another Florida team for the past 8 years, and it has actually been a bad year 8 years (for them) on the field. Likewise the ACC has only had two Florida teams for a few years. I think if the ACC need another to get to 14, it is probably UConn. Then if they ever do get Notre Dame (which I think is reasonable since at that point the Big East might only be USF, Cincy, Rutgers and TCU) then they probably add Rutgers, and have a legit shot at capturing NYC with three semi local schools (UConn, Syr, Rutgers), plus three out of town teams with large greater NYC alumni bases (Miami, Notre Dame, and Duke). It will help if several of the basketball teams make it a point to schedule OOC games with SJU.

Miami was heading "south" so to speak under Coker and Shalala anyway.

But you're right. I probably should have said the ACC will need another Florida team in a major market area to have any shot at retaining a piece of Florida.

Please tell me what screams SEC about Maryland of all schools??? This is the biggest BS comment I have ever read. The only school that makes sense is VT and I am having a hard time seeing any ACC school leave with the pricey exit fee they have recently adopted of 20million.

+1 on all of this.
I really, REALLY don't think FSU is going to leave the ACC. But just for the sake of argument, let's say they do. Obviously, they would only leave the ACC for the SEC, so you're talking about an SEC that has Florida AND Florida State. At that point, the SEC essentially owns all significant media-coverage of college athletics within the State of Florida. Owns it.

Gators + Seminoles >>>>>>>>>> All of the other college programs in the state, combined.

There would be little point in the ACC trying to "retake" Florida by adding USF (or anyone else). That'd be like the BE trying to "retake" Pennsylvania by adding Temple, except that in this scenario, Pitt and Penn State would both be in the same league.

Equating Miami as the Temple to Flroida and Florida State's Penn State and Pittsburgh is a bit harsh, don't you think?

I really had in mind USF, based on post #11 by omni-orange.

Even there, I think more highly of USF than of Temple. But that's the closest parallel I could think of involving two teams comparable to FSU-UF
