Quote:East Carolina of Conference USA announced on Wednesday it has applied for membership in the Big East Conference.

"While we have formalized our interest in Big East Conference membership as a viable option, ECU will remain focused on competing at the highest level through the efforts of Conference USA," chancellor Steve Ballard and athletic director Terry Holland said in a statement Wednesday.

The Big East is regrouping after Syracuse and Pittsburgh joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.

A source told ESPN's Joe Schad on Tuesday that the Big East's initial expansion targets would be the service academies -- Army, Navy, and Air Force -- with Central Florida and East Carolina as second-tier possibilities.

The Associated Press, citing a person with knowledge of the discussions, reported Wednesday that Navy and Air Force are the top choices, but as football-only members.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday because the conference does not want to publicly disclose its plans.

Navy is an independent and Air Force plays in the Mountain West Conference.

Leaders from the Big East football schools and TCU, which is to enter the league in 2012, met with commissioner John Marinatto in Manhattan on Tuesday night. All the league's members, including the eight nonfootball-playing schools, committed to recruit new members.

Stange. All the ECU people bitching about AQ and not one comment on this, an hour after I posted it?

Oh well.
Fear of rejection.

What would like for us to say??? This information is not new....It was all over the place last night. Clearly the Big East has other plans so no real need to comment.

If the BE rejects ECU, it should be clear to WVU, Rutgers, and USF that they're not serious about keeping their AQ status or college football.

I saw it posted at 6:11PM today. I didn't know they had applied until today. I knew they wanted to go, but didn't think they'd officially requested.
I think ECU should ask TCU what they think of the Big East right now. I don't see how the Big East doesn't lose at least 1 of their remaining 6, so why apply?
ESPN posted it this evening, but there was a CBS article about it last night.
Yea apparently the BE isn't too interested in the application. They are fools.

ECU should hope The Big East rejects them, I think the Big East is toast.

Why should we hope that? Got any better ideas for us to have an AQ bid, besides some pie in the sky merger that isn't happening?
jeez.

That may be exactly the plan here. A public rejection of ECU while at the same time trying to get Villanova in might break the rest of the schools away from the bb onlies.

If WVU or UL get an invite to any other AQ conference they are gone. I figure the Big12 wants to keep 12 teams BYU gets them to 11, I figure WVU or UL are their top choices, IF TX stays in. If the SEC picks one from the ACC then UCONN is likely the replacemnt. I seriously doubt any Big East team turns down an offer from another AQ conference.

This dude just seems hellbent on destroying the BE's AQ status. If I were the C-USA's commish, I'd be in talks with the BCS right now. Not all teams are going to be asked to join an AQ conference and, with the loss of the BE's AQ, I think the BCS would add another one. It probably would have been the MWC, but they were screwed by BYU, TCU, and Utah. They're going to be a mediocre conference with BSU dominating every year (boring). The C-USA could make the case for an AQ, provided they get commitments from UL, Cincy, WVU, TCU, etc., assuming they don't go elsewhere. Even Rutgers. Yes Rutgers, I know you don't want the C-USA now, but with an AQ, all the sudden it's not so bad. It seems clear that Marinatto just doesn't give two sh*ts about about football. Kinda sucks for UL, Cincy, and TCU, who came to the BE because of the AQ. Talk about sleazy.

Very true.. if ECU's application is out there and they're rejected, the current 5 will be on the phones looking for someone else AQ to take them.
