I dunno.. Nobody forced Pitt and Syracuse to pick up John Swofford's phone number.
Do you really think SY and Pitt apply if they weren't encouraged to?

They were obviously told that the ACC would take them. Why would they apply just to get denied?

Indeed. BTW, good luck in the ACC. Hopefully, a way can be found to keep Syracuse and Georgetown playing one game a year.
Well it is obvious no one wanted to be left behind back in 03', SU lost out at the last minute.....and I am sure Pitt was thrilled to be left behind with basically WVU.

WVU is going to jet to probably the SEC.

So you would have the new upstart UConn team.....the perinally bad Rutgers team.....and basically 4 CUSA teams.

It blows but it still may work out.....as I have said before.....there are too many AQ schools that nobody wants.....who actually are decent like a TCU and if USF has finally arrived and keep Holtz for a while.....I think we will do okay.

NBC will still be interested in getting some football on TV for Versus.....so I don't think all is lost. Maybe we won't see the same money we were hoping to see....but again....everybody else's TV deal is done for a while so you we are still last up.

I don't think for a second that the ACC made the first contact.
the acc just bent us over the rail...again

I'm sure the Georgetown series will continue. Alternating home and home every year. It would be nice to play USF in football every once in a while too. Although in the ACC there are already two Florida schools...
Though this is impressively sleazy, even by the ACC's standards. It's "Bob Irsay moves the Colts in the middle of the night" levels of sleaze.
I can't blame the ACC. You'd have to have your entire body buried in the sand to not recognize that conference alignments were incredibly unstable, and that being proactive is a way to protect yourself.

The ACC was proactive, the Big East was asleep at the wheel, and now it is dead.
I don't know if Marinatto was alseep. I mean he did go talk to Swofford and beebe. Now these guys will be carving up his conference.

i think marinattos plan was to add the b12 schools. he didnt expect cuse and pitt to defect. i still think they could have waited to see what oklahoma an texas were going to do. unless of course there;s more to the story wew havent heard yet

This. How can you be caught sleeping TWICE IN A SPAN OF EIGHT YEARS??!?!?!

Seriously, how is that possible?
It was inevitable. The hybrid system and the catholic block was destined to gut this thing like a fish.

The guy is an idiot. He never talks about anything to the media like Larry Scott of the PAC-12. He is passive. He is not out there inviting people like every other conference.

At worst, he should have just listened to the football schools and split. Even Jim Calhoun spoke openly about the split. I mean you got one of the original BE legend coaches out there saying 17 teams are too many. How can you not seeing the writing on the wall? Even if we did not split, he should have pursued 12/20 model by adding teams like ECU or UCF. I know they are not desirable but there is strength in numbers.

At end of the day, BE/ACC merger happened basically with ACC who made all the moves.

Sad sad day for the BE. I don't feel sorry for the idiots who run this conference when they lose their jobs though.
They wont lose their jobs. The Big East will be for all sports BUT football

I have no doubt that contact was maintained after 2003 at the president/chancellor level just as it was maintained prior to 2003. But let me ask you; would Pitt & SU have done this if they didn't already know WVU was heading to the SEC? Did WVU give Pitt the heads up? What is Big East football if West Virginia bailed first?

i doubt they'll lose their jobs since the BE will continue as a nonfb conference.
i also dont think bringing in ecu and ucf would have stopped this , or stop the probable move of uconn, rutgers and wvu. imo it would have left them high and dry while everyone else scrambled for a home somewhere.
i could be wrong

:jawdrop:It does not matter, they wanted to leave because they applied, when contacted! 07-coffee3
