I've been looking at different ways to get from Ogilvie to SF. I don't mind walking, but others going with me don't want to. A directions search has led me to taking a green line from Clinton to Roosevelt and then the 146 bus from there to SF (Museum Campus). I've never ridden the subway system before. What would it cost to take the train? Is this even my best/most efficient option? or should i just take a cab? Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but id rather ask them now than be lost in Chicago.

I might be cheaper to take a cab, depending on how many people you have. It might not.

You can find the exact prices online, but I know a trip on the L is like, 2.20. I forget because I have a U-Pass and its unlimted for an entire semester.

So, I recemmend taking public transit. I always felt like a tool when I had to rely on a taxi :)

Whats funny is that even though I had taken public transit in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, etc I was still kinda nervous about taking the L. NO idea why. Maybe because it was above ground. *shrug*

Keep in mind, when you put cash in the CTA card machine, you wont be getting change back. I learned that the hard way :)
OH!! Dude, if you (or someone else) has an android phone (i think iphone too) I STRONGLY recommend using google maps to navigate the public transit. SUPER easy and it will show you the fastest way to get there....and will show you were to make transfers from rail to bus.
From Oglilvie you can walk to union station (above or below ground). At union you can take a 1 or 7 or 126 bus to Michigan avenue and south to Roosevelt and get off there and take underpass and walk to SF. That way it's less than a mile walk. It's probably about the same as the train route you described, although the train may be faster (less traffic?) But on the bus you don't have to leaver the ground!
03-wink
One way ticket on the "L" is $2.25. You would need exact change for a ticket. The walk from the Roosevelt Green Line station to Soldier Field is not too bad. Many people will be making the walk. I remember the Iowa game it was just a constant throng of people.
Here is how I am planning to get there from Ogilvie...Riverwalk to Navy Pier (about 45 minute walk). Water-taxi leaves Navy Pier about every 20 minutes, takes about 10 minutes to get to SF. If your friends REALLY can't walk 45 minutes on a beautiful day, you can take one water taxi from Ogilvie to Navy Pier...get off at Navy Pier and take the one that goes from Navy Pier to SF. Caution...last water taxi leaving SF, I think, is about 6pm so you might have to find a different way back.

That is insane! Haha
Depending how you do it, Google maps says it should take about 37 to 40 min total

This is the route i was thinking was best. I just didn't know of the trains were free or how much they were cuz CTA's website was confusing. Ill probably be doing this.

...the water taxi idea is dumb. Sorry, but why would I want to go all the way to Navy Pier?
Sorry for trying to help. That is the route I am taking because I like to walk along the Riverwalk and I prefer boats to buses or taxies.
If there's 3 or more of you.. just take a cab, its easier if you don't know where you're going, and decent chance its cheaper. Its not that far from Olgilvie.

Its also much quicker, I love taking the el, but its a short cab ride, and it's 2.25 a person on the el, not really saving much money (if any) taking the el. 5 or 10 min. cab ride for probably about the same amount of money or 40 min. taking the el? That's a no brainer to me.

Just tell the cab walking distance from SF, will give him more options to get there quickly.

It's only a couple more blocks walk from Ogilvie to Soldier Field than Ogilvie to Navy Pier

I get it already. My way is not the fastest or the cheapest but it works for me. Like I said, I prefer walking along the Riverwalk and taking a boat rather than a bus or a cab. To each his own. I'm not going for the fastest or cheapest. I'm looking for the most enjoyable way for me and my family to spend our morning/early afternoon on what looks to be a beautiful day in the greatest city in the world.
