Janey Charlton Added To LaRiviere's Coaching Staff
Charlton brings international coaching experience to the rowing program.

PULLMAN, Wash. - Janey Charlton, who possesses five years of international coaching experience in Canada and New Zealand, has been hired as Washington State University's assistant women's rowing coach, head coach Jane LaRiviere announced, Friday.
"In a relatively short period of time Janey has accumulated a wide range of coaching experience," said LaRiviere. "She was a very successful junior coach in Canada and equally successful in the college ranks in New Zealand. She will provide technical expertise and enhance our international recruiting. We are extremely lucky to have her!"
Charlton comes to the Palouse after spending this summer coaching the New Zealand University crew that placed eighth at the World University Rowing Championships. During her duties at New Zealand, Charlton also served as head coach of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand (2001-2002) where her squads captured 23 medals, including 12 gold in the New Zealand University Rowing Championships.
Before arriving to New Zealand, Charlton served as assistant coach at the University of Victoria. In addition, she served as its summer club coach in 2001. She also served as head coach at the 2001 Canada Games where she led her squad to second place finishes in overall men's, women's and teams points competition.
Prior to that, Charlton served two years (1999-2001) as Rowing British Columbia's Provincial Coach. In addition, she was the Canadian Junior National Team Coach, taking her squad to the Junior World Championships and leading the women's eight plus boat to a fifth place finish.
Charlton began her coaching career in the spring of 1997 at St. Peters School in New Zealand before moving to Canada in the fall and coaching at St. Andrews High School in British Columbia. That fall she also coached at the Victoria City Rowing Club where she served as head women's junior coach, head masters coach and club administrator (1997-2000).
A 1996 graduate of Otago University, Charlton earned her bachelor's degree in physical education. While competing in New Zealand, Charlton won five New Zealand National Championship Titles, and nine North Island Championship Titles.
