DeKalb, IL: What happened to Wisconsin playing at Huskie Stadium? Why did the game end up at Soldier Field?
Jeff Compher: I have heard this question quite a bit recently. The reality is that Wisconsin was going to cancel the game at Huskie Stadium prior to us playing at Wisconsin in 2009. We renegotiated the agreement to play in 2009 at Wisconsin, and to play in 2011 at Soldier Field. These were the terms that Wisconsin would agree to in order for us to continue the series. The renegotiation resulted in a much better financial arrangement for NIU, and we felt still satisfied our many fans throughout the region who can see us play in Chicago. An additional benefit is it enhances our recruiting opportunities.

+1 and there you have it. Personally, I haven't posted on this subject, but I think its a great idea...I've never been to a Bears game. So to get to go to SF for 25 bucks is a steal...even buying club seats, how often can u sit Club at SF for 90 bucks?

I personally feel the same. I however have been to soldier field twice and it costs way too much. 25 bucks for us students is a great deal. I personally like the Soldier Field deal id rather play wisconsin in chicago than have to go up to a rowdy Camp Randall.

Plus now you students get a buy one get one free ticket!

well i dont bc i got my ticket back in July. Wish that deal was in place back then, but i am not one to complain. I am just happy to be goin to see another football game

OK so you have read that the students that have already bought a ticket DO NOT get a free one?... Interesting. I wonder why. Its not like the endzone seating is even close to filled up yet.
Unfortunately the "Free ticket" has to go to a student cuz you have to have a student id to pick up the ticket at SF. This sucks cuz the people I want to spend a day in Chitown with aren't students.

I still have my student ID and I bet a ton of recent grads do too!
From AD JC
We are now offering NIU students the chance to buy one ticket to the Soldier Field game for $25 and receive another ticket - that does not have to be used by a student - for free
Yeah I just read that and it makes my day! (it wasn't that way before)

This game was never slated for HS. Give it up already.
Its SF or Madison....
03-banghead

Well, it WAS slated for HS - they signed the agreement, but Wisky got out of it.

Compher is covering tracks with that, I guarantee Wisconsin plays the game at Huskie Stadium if Compher did not try and expand his resume with the Soldier Field fiasco. Im glad this backfired on Compher, it is a tough lesson to learn, get big opponents to Huskie Stadium and once you get them in the contract, keep them there. There is no doubt in my mind UW plays in Dekalb if the Soldier Field option is not there.

the bolded is very infuriating to read. this shows that NIU had absolutely zero leverage in the whole situation. why do these programs (not just NIU/Wisconsin, but similar deals) even bother with these agreements if they're broken before they get going? how f'in shady and scummy is the world of college football.

NIU had the leverage. I think Compher is covering his tracks here and is not accurately depicting what happened. I dont blame him for that, I would not expect him to come out and say he messed up. Time to move on, and lets learn from this for future scheduling so we dont mess it up again.
I think these years-out, future agreements are really more like "letters of intent" more than a signed contract. I don't think they become "contractual" until the schedule is officially released.

...just my opinion.

Schools like NIU have ZERO leverage against the bigs. We have much more to lose than they do.

No, they didn't, because Wisconsin's athletic department prints money, and they always had enough of it to meet whatever the original buyout amount was. NIU had no way of making Wisconsin do something it a) never intended to actually do or b) decided at some point it no longer wanted to do.

My only point was Wisconsin had no intention of not playing in Dekalb until Soldier Field was offered
+1
Exactly. What are we going to do? Sue them and never have the chance to play them again?

You have no idea whether that's actually true or not. None. So just stop.

NIU should have accepted the buy out if Wisconsin was going to cancel the game. I think the misconception here is that Wisconsin wanted to cancel the game, they did not.

If this was anybody other than Wisconsin you'd be screaming bloody murder, regardless of the facts presented.
Imagine if Illinois did it lol
