A quick thought that I haven't quite fleshed out yet...vague stream of consciousness...

Depending on what kind of sub-Death Penalty Miami gets, they could be an effectively dead program for the next 10 years, possibly.
They'll field a team, but with post-season bans and scholorship reductions, their fball and bball programs will be WORTHLESS to the ACC. And a detriment to any of their school's SOS.

Combine that with UNC (who's penalties won't be AS bad, but could be bad)...the ACC is going to have big competitive holes in their line-up.

Assuming they don't lose anyone to the SEC, would it behoove the ACC to try to get to 14 teams to offset any negative effects from this? It would be...unlikely that they'd kick out Miami...but adding two teams to add up the competitive balance...

It would also allow them to renegotiate their contract which, by now, looks pretty bad.

I dunno. Just a few kick thoughts that popped into my head.
The "U" still brought in TV viewers for ACC's TV Partners...and no doubt they (ACC) will not be pleased if the program gets slammed and takes years to build back up (i.e. might be better for the U to fall on the sword NOW, start the penalties NOW vs dragging it out for years...because the U will suffer recruiting wise as long as this scandal doesn't get settled).

The problem for the U is that there are so few people they can FIRE as many of the violations were committed under 2 previous football head coaches, 1 former basketball coach (who just bolted to Missouri just a few months ago) and 2 former AD's (one who was the chairman of the NCAA infraction committee while his replacement "out of the blue" bolted off to Texas Tech last year).

Only one still there is the U's President Donna Shalala...and she has plenty of "political" connections...that might save her hide...and/or cause hesitation by those that want to go after her.

No clue what the ACC will do or won't do...but if Miami is going to "go away" for a period of time (i.e. not be competitive because of severe sanctions) AND the ACC loses a team or two like FSU or Va Tech and/or Clemson...ACC might have to expand just out of desperation.
ACC may have more bowl slots than they need. Could be an incentive for a team to join. We could end up with two teams ineligible for post season. It is about to come down to beating Duke for the Coastal crown.

Right, if only just to get the competitive balance up.
The ACC has Duke, Wake, and UVA. They have been at a compeitive disadvantage fior years
