Question for those in Texas. If the Texas House Committee has no authority, then why does Slive need to go to this hearing? A&M should just go ahead and leave the Big XII today instead of tabling it further down this week. What exactly am I missing or not understanding?

Maybe they want to question him about who contacted who first. Texas and Baylor are crying about tampering, and are threatening to take legal action.
Pure politics - that simple. Baylor used this to their advantage to get into the Big 12 - hence the term the "Baylor problem".
how much does all this dancing do when A&M 'sources' are saying... oh it's just legal stuff.

Doesn't that make it pretty evident that there was collusion. And I know I spelled that wrong and probably used it out of context.

Even still, Slive could lie. A&M and Slive most likely had more than enough time to get their stories to a T. This feels like a waste of taxpayer money IMO.

If I'm A&M I'm advocating Houston to go to the SEC with them or replace them in the Big XII. This would allow another state school BCS access.
If Slive appears in person, it's further confirmation that the A&M move will be finalized soon. If the SEC was putting A&M on the back burner for a couple of years, Slive wouldn't attend and would just send some assistant to the assistant commissioner in charge of community relations to the hearing.
That's cool on the threat of legal action - if true - from Texas and Baylor. A&M and the SEC have lawyers too.

I could only dream of that would happening! Texas, Tech, and Baylor would go crazy! That almost happened at one time in history.

Yes, and I don't see why any of this is necessary. Leaving one conference for another should not be such a high priority item for politicos from any state. But, maybe this being Texas, the A&M folks want to placate a few folks and smooth some ruffled feathers best they can on the way out. I don't know why they just can't state that they do not want to be in an inequitable conference, end of story. Of course, they were part of the inequity for a while.

Neither the SEC or the Big 12 would invite Houston. The Big 12 has the state more than covered and the SEC would not be getting bigger payments by adding them.

If I was a citizen and taxpayer in Texas I'd be pissed off. You have a special committee meeting for this when the state's budget isn't too hot. I'd rather see my lawmakers have a special meeting to fix the real problems of the state.

All of this is a waste of time! If Texas was doing this, no one would be doing anything; or could do anything about it. That's why A&M has had enough!

Houston to the SEC? pass me the crack pipe... 03-melodramatic
The bios on the committee members are available online - some of the committee members are alums of SMU, Texas, and Baylor. Hopefully, this is a productive hearing however; many are skeptical because of the shenanigans that some current Big 12 members used to gain entry into the Big 12.

I doubt Texas wants Houston but to be politically correct they may bring up Houston when expansion happens for the Big 12-3. They can then go along with the majority of the conference and bring in BYU or AFA and say they tried. Anything is possible though so if you Coogs find yourselves in the Big 12 soon, don't forget your very good friends in far west Texas, down the line. 04-cheers
At the end of the day, this is little more than a dog and pony show. This committee doesn't have a great deal of influence over a great deal of anything and certainly aren't in a position to prevent this.
This all political Kabuki Theater.

Branch's biggest donors are BU people and they want "their" guy to try and stop this. Unfortunately, Branch has no authority to do anything, all he can do is by play the "love of tradition" and "think of the economy" cards to try and persuade A&M to stay.

A&M gets to say they "listened to the politicians" and you guarantee their big points will be:

1) You (Branch) were perfectly OK with UT starting a network that benefited them but hurt the other Texas schools by diminishing their ability to maximize their own Tier 3 rights. In fact you commended them for it. Are you saying that its only OK for UT to do whats in their own economic best interest, even if it conflicts with the other 3 school's economics?

2) This will allow an opportunity for another Texas school to become BCS! We have no doubt that Baylor and Texas, who have been going on and on about the importance of tradition, the strong ties of the SWC and the need to put the state first means they are fully willing and ready to sponsor the university of Houston as A&M's replacement!

..should be HIGHLY entertaining!02-13-banana
