Why is it assumed that once one AQ conference expands to 14 or 16 schools that the others will follow?
so as not lose markets?

to offer more content?

to attempt to renegotiate contracts?

IDK, Big East and Big XII didn't even seem concerned to get to twelve while others were making that move...

money

If the money is there, than why wait for somebody else to go first?
I think the feeling is generally that the conferences are competing with each other and can't let the other get ahead or risk losing out. There might be some validity to this if the PAC-16 is formed and the SEC goes to 16, but I think the likelyhood of both is small and I don't think anyone else is going to expand past 12 just because the SEC goes to 14.
The BIG East will soon break the 14 or 16 paradigm.

It can be further explained this way:

Phase 1) Expand to 16 teams

Phase 2)?????

Phase 3) Profit

There's nothing special about 16 as a number. The Pac was proposing 16 last year because they needed to offer that many B12 schools to entice UT. If there had been any way to get UT with just one other school, preferably A&M or OU, they would have done it that way. For that matter, if the Pac could get to 14 today by just inviting UT and OU, they would do it.

Trickle down effect.

If this was the Big East picking up teams. It is a non-story (see TCU) from the expansion standpoint effect on other AQ's.

The "Big" dogs expand and they will be choosing from other AQ conferences. Therefore those leagues may not need to expand to 14 or whatever but they will have schools that need to be replaced.

Hence everyone is effected by the SEC expanding.
