Who is the fatty in the Cardinals jersey behind the plate? I wonder if they had to use a fork lift to get hi out of that crouch.

Far be it for me to defend those aholes in Congress, but back in the 70's and 80's, there were a lot of fat people in baseball. Normally DH's, but in some other positions as well. Never in the outfield.

I remember a lot of DH's that were fat. Matter of fact, I don't remember too many that weren't. I have a '78-'83 Donruss baseball card collection.

I was thinking Tom Foley

Damn, come to think of it, I have a ton of sports cards. I have 3 Shaq rookies, as well as Boggs, Mattingly, Sandberg, and Ripkin. I don't know if the hobby is as big as it was in the late 80's, early 90's so I'm sitting on them.

Designated hitters aren't baseball players? What are they, people plucked from the stands? Rusty Staub was a DH. He wasn't a baseball player?

Those were my peak collecting years, too. Just a few years too late to really cash in.

They are baseball players in the same way that punters are football players. They get a jersey and a spot on the roster. DHs are mostly just roided up goons that either crush the ball or strike out (David Ortiz).

Leaving the dugout 4 times a day doesnt make you a baseball player.

I don't remember too many of those. Care to elaborate?

You field, you hit. You hit, you field. This isn't complicated.

Bonds finished up as a DH.

Ortiz
Jose Canseco
Jeremy Giambi
Rafael Palmeiro
Gary Sheffield

All of these guys spent at least some time at DH.

Rebel

To be fair, to me, I was referring to the 70's and 80's. Bonds, Giambi, Canseco, etc. weren't DH's in that time. They were stars. Maybe I'm just older than you guys. Back then they weren't "roided" up. They may have been "Big Mac'ed" up, but "roided" up wasn't their problem.

Barry Bonds? He played in the NL his entire career. The only time he would've been a DH was during interleague play. Ther rest of the time he was an outfielder.

They were baseball players before they became glorified slow pitch softball players.
