Highlights of 1987 EMU Hurons championship season that ended with win in Cal Bowl. Yes, those are people in the stands at Rynearson. It just shows what winning can do. It's been too long ...

Excellent David.

I thought the same thing when I saw the footage on the EMU board.

There is no denying the school spirit.

It is what, 24 years ago, but I remember the EMU / Toledo game on ESPN.

Was it a Thursday night??????

Anyone have footage of the UNLV/EMU game in '95? I believe that game holds the EMU home game attendance record. Believe the crowd was more then 25K.

What I wouldn't give to have that 1987 Cal Bowl game on DVD.
I remember that Cal Bowl game quite well. I had done a bowl winner picking contest with a HS friend of mine and he was certain the Hurons would lose that one. I called him and shouted "HURONS!" into his answering machine many times.
OMG!
Just did a little internet searching.
The EMU Hurons changed their mascot to an eagle?
When the "F" did that happen?

Great video too.

Political correctness. Don't think they should have changed it. Can't remember when they did that though.

Oh, man, don't get me started on that one! The changes was made in 1991. It's still a sore subject among the older alums to say the least.

In restrospect I made a mistake choosing UT over EMU just on the basis of wrestling getting eliminate during my tenure but such is life.
Otherwise my time UT was well spent and a good college experience.
And of course I knew they became the Eagles.
But I don't like it.
The Huron mascot look was definitely superior and part of the Michigan heritage.

Yeah, I really miss the HURONator helmet vs. the CHImP Spear & Feather helmet. Two of the MAC's best helmets. The former Dean of Students at CMU, "tried" (unsuccessfully) to argue that such representations were denigrating to Native Americans. I'm glad he's gone!
Was EMU unsuccessful at getting the blessing of the local Native Americans or did they not even try? North Dakota is having that problem right now. One tribe gave its blessing and the other tribe has not (though the tribe that said yes used popular sovereignty and the one that said no used a three person panel so who knows what would happen if they asked the entire tribe). Obviously some teams make it work like the Seminoles in Florida but it doesn't work everywhere.
From what I've read, and heard from former EMU students (my sister being one), the university administration literally mandated a ban on all things Huron-related. The tribe had no problem with the symbols, or representations.
That seems like a silly thing to do if the Hurons were alright with it. Besides its not like you have a stereotype style name. Sounds like the administration was not that into the name.

The guys on WRIF were having a field day with that decision. The Huron Chief certainly wasn't amused. I believe his comment was: so we're affiliated with a university, a school of higher learning, and without so much as asking us, you take that away, supposedly for our own good? I think we've seen this before.

This is paraphrasing, since I'm relying on memory, but I believe I got the gist of it.
