Emily Tanen's photos with the critters she champions clearly show beauty isn't always skin deep. Sometimes it also goes all the way to the bone. ♥

Emily spent two years fighting to save the dogs on death row at New York's Animal Care & Control in Manhattan. She was terminated May 2011...

"They didn't like me since day 1. I literally have been telling my coworkers since the first week and they didn't like me, and everything that went wrong was my fault.

They did not give me any specific reasons for firing me. The only reason they said was "its not a good fit" and "you take pictures of the dogs with people in them even though you are not allowed to". This was a rule that I was very against, and I tried to tell them how idiotic it was. I was an art major in college, with a focus in photography, studied in PARIS for one year, I'm not just some person with a camera, I actually knew what I was doing, and photographed for other shelters in the past. I tried explaining this and how its so important for dogs, especially pit bulls, pit bulls who "failed" their bahavior test, to have a photo of them with a human, or on their back for belly rubs, etc. They claimed their "research" proves that it doesn't help. Just a total lie.

The only people that were ever in my photos were volunteers who obviously had no objection to being in the photos, they were of the same mindset as me. I worked with a very small, core group of volunteers to ensure each and every dog had a bio and pics, especially once they made it to the euth list. "
