Damn...wholesale ass kissing. That was more of a convention than a debate.

Winners....in order IMO

Newt
Mitt
Michelle
Ron

Losers
Pawlenty....He was made to look foolish about "OBomenycare" attack. He should have thrown down on his ass on this issue...instead...he pussed out.

The rest did fine...in what was a love fest.

John King did a decent job. He is quick on his feet and was able to ask good questions off the cuff. He did though tend to focus on Mitt and Santorum through the first half of the event. It was pissing me off. I think someone in the booth got to him because the second half...he was more balanced in his picks for the questions.

I was very surprised that in all this that no questons showed up about tax reform and specifically the Fair Tax. I really think the GOP is missing out by not jumping on this bandwagon and pushing it.
As long as the candidates are competing within the party, they're never gonna give any answers that might jeopardize their standing for the nomination. Additionally you're never gonna get good/detailed answers when you have 30 (?) seconds to answer and there's as many people to go through as they had in two hours. They also need to stop asking "gotcha" questions, which just makes the candidates have to tiptoe around the questions rather than addressing anything of substance.

Additionally, I also thought that Newt did much better than I expected. But they're all competing to be the anti-Obama, like the Dem's tried to be the anti-Bush in '04 and '08. They also seemed hesitant to attack each other, almost a unified front trying to be more electable than taking down the other options.
The Cain Media Handjob Parade at Fox was in full effect tonight for Bachmann at CNN.

What problems do you have with Bachmann? I understand you don't like Cain, even though he has said that he would not oppose an audit of the Fed if Congress sends a bill to his desk (You do know the President can't do anything he wants, right?), but about Bachmann, for real, what is your issue with her?

BTW, Paul has been elected, what did he say, 14 times? WTF has he done since he's been there? Seems to me like part of the problem. Seems to me like he's great at paying lip service.

My issues with Cain are TARP and his former position at the Fed. Bachmann is alright, but it isn't the job of the news outlets to decide who did best ... it is the viewer's job.

You're right. Damn you Ron Paul for not cloning yourself into a majority of the Senate and House. The country is moving Ron Paul's direction though.
I thought it was an excellent first debate. All seven did very good and showed that this field is very serious about this election. I thought Bachman did very well and perhaps moved up a bit. Cain, Newt and Pawlenty got the real tough questions were they had to clarify earlier comments/issues. Romney showed his experience in this setting handing the Health care issue. Liked Cain's answer on social security reform with more of a 401k approach to retirement like Bush proposed a few years back.

Breakdown:
Governors-2
Romney
Pawlenty

Senators-1
Santorum

Representatives-3
Newt (speaker)
Bachman
Paul

Businessman-1
Cain

A couple of things, isn't this the second debate? Second, why am I not surprised you would be in favor of enriching Wall Street even more?
I'm in favor of enriching my own retirement with the money I worked to earn. I could do better in a money market account than the goverment gets on my social security contributions. I could do a lot better investing in an index fund of the S&P 500. Most stock holders aren't wall street bankers....they are small individual investors like me.

This was the first real debate with all the major canidates participating. Most of these canidates won't be around for the South Carolina primary. After Iowa and New Hampshire it will be down to two or three canidates. My guess is Bachman and Pawlenty do well in Iowa and Romney takes New Hampshire with those three moving on to battle from there. McCain did well in SC and that state is likely up for grabs this time. Bachman have a real shot at getting VP. That brings in women, conservatives and tea party support to the ticket. Her congressional position would give insight on the workings of the house. A strong showing would also dismiss the MSNBC and the rest of the liberal media slant that conservative women are dumb and stupid.
I agree on Pawlenty. He had an opportunity to lay a beatdown on Romney. King lobbed him one he should have crushed, and he whiffed.

You realize members of Congress can't single-handedly do whatever they want, right?

Bachmann voted for the Patriot Act. That's enough to condemn her in my eyes.

Quote:Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who has run for president before, did little to shake his image as a fringe candidate by talking too fast and dropping obscure subjects like "Keynesian bubble'' and "monetary policy'' into the conversation.

Unbelievable. "Monetary policy" is an obscure subject?

Neither party wants to give up the income tax because it helps to guarantee that they keep donations coming to their campaigns. It is what it is...

After thinking about it today....Newt blew the field away. His answers were short and to the point. He nailed every question. I don't think he can overcome his personal history and his recent staff issues...but...He put in a damn strong performance. If he keeps this up...He might change some minds. He also seemed to be portraying himself as a moderate last night.

As for Newts personal history....This country elected twice a Dem. with a sordid personal past not so long ago.
