Staten to WVA

I guess we will be seeing Staten a few times a year for a few years after he sits out this year.

I am scratching my head on this one. After this last season I read in the Dayton paper where the UD coach Brian Gregory was talking about Staten and the other guard transferring, right before Gregory left for Georgia Tech, and he said he would NEVER go through another season like the past one again. He was speaking about how difficult Staten and his father were to deal with and how it negatively affected the team.

So now Staten is transferring to a HC who, atleast in his UC days, doesn't put up with that type of stuff, and will forcefully let you know that if need be.

Either Staten and father will make a 180 degrees turn in attitude, or he will spend a lot of time on the WVA bench, or he will give Huggs another heart attack.
His shooting alone will give Huggs a heart attack.

Agreed. I really can't believe they took a chance on him.

He's not going to be allowed to shoot. He'll be instructed to throw the ball into the Turk and their other incoming transfer. He may not even be able to beat out their incoming freshman PG for the job either.

That's what makes this a puzzling decision on both ends. He transfered because of that very reason. I guess he's willing to swallow some pride to play in the BE and go to the NCAA tournament.
I think the main thing for him and his family is that they didn't think Brian Gregory could coach or develop players, which is exactly what the Dayton-area had come to believe awhile ago.
Count me is as another who is surprised West Virginia is using a scholarship on him. Strange move by Huggs.
Perhaps this means there is a problem with the other 4 star recruit coming to play this year, Jabarie Hinds?

Nah... this is the same guy who signed Jihad Muhammed.
WVU continues it's recent trend of long reaches to fill the last couple roster spots.

Based on what I've seen and heard, that's a good thing. 03-nerner

I clicked over to their scout site and he's expected on campus with the rest of their huge recruiting class later this month. My guess is that Huggins likes his potential and is using this as an opportunity to balance out the scholarships.
Alright, I'll be that guy... Juwan Staten is very talented. I was happy when he was supposedly headed to Penn State because we'd never have to face him. Not a good shooter but a lot of that was shot selection in my opinion. If Huggs can get him to listen & buy in, he could be a legit BE point guard. I know a lot of UD fans that hated to see him go. Again, just my 2 cents.

I share this thought. He was a talented recruit. He had a decent freshman season. I understand that his dad was a problem at Dayton, but that program was also a mess under Gregory in my opinion.

Maybe this blows up in Huggins face, but he has plenty of time to develop as a player and already is decent. I don't see this as that bad of a get for WVU.
I don't. Watched him in two AAU events when I knew UC was on his radar and in the 3-4 games I watched he always got out played by guys who never even got D1 interest. Just don't think he's that good. Mix in the headcase issues and he's a real keeper.
he reminds me of Taron Barker. Assist totals look good, but can't shoot from the field or the foul line.

How was he such a huge recruit? Was it really just that he was on that AAU team with Sullinger? I think he was Oak Hill Academy's starting PG. I only saw him a few times last year and he looked like a freshman PG that couldn't shoot, but it seems like there has to be some talent to mine there.
It is all his athletic ability that made him such a high valued recruit. There is no doubt that he distributes the ball well and can get to the basket. His jump shot is the biggest weakness he has. The best way to play against him is what UC did, give him a huge cushion and let him shoot the ball. When you do that, he goes 4-14 like he did in US Bank last year.

jihad was a major disappointment. Still very bitter about him and James White quitting classes and letting the school , teammates and fans down during the NIT. They'll both be quitters their entire lives.
