But heres the rub, ( and Ill admit it torques me off a lot too) sometimes we have a perfectly good thread about schedules or whatever, and someone types in ULL.

The next thing you know we have a cajun's poster make a somewhat smart arse remark along the lines of "Who is ULL we are UL?" and then then the thread degenerates AGAIN into a name issue, then eventually a Louisiana Budget crisis post, followed by a Eager Eagle state legislature report, followed by a LaTech "seperation" refrence.

Now we have a 50 post thread about "Sun Belt Schedule woes" thread that is in reality 10 posts about that, and 40 about the issues listed above. It does tend to permeate a LOT of threads along here.

This is my proposal on solving these issues that seem be bothering many of our posters:

"be informed that any off topic reference to Louisiana Special Topics will result in the immediate suspension of all posters involved"

The above clause should be situated at the top of every new thread if possible, or at least stickied. If posters fails to comply, a three to seven day suspension should follow. Three suspensions should then lead to a permanent ban.

* Keep in mind, these special topics can be created in the smack talk folder or an ongoing single thread covering all lousiana special topics on the main forum.

* New scoreboard threads for ULM (and other normal non-issue postings) are obviously ok topics for the main board and should be treated as so and posted onto the main board, but if they deviate to special topics, suspensions should insue. If smack talk begins, but unrelated to special topics, then the topic should be moved to the smack talk forum.

* Louisiana Special Topics: The Name Crisis, Louisiana Budget Crisis, LA Tech Smack Talk. (as outlined by OwlFamily). Again, a single ongoing thread should be created for these issues, or even a new forum outlet since it has permiated our board as much as it has.

It's a shame that it has come to this, but but I feel many will benefit from this. This is obviously just a rough outline and many of you should offer suggestions on how to tweak it, if this is the route we want to take. I realise no one likes to be placed under a set of rules, and many of you will be against this. I did not post this to win friends, but rather to offer a decent solution to the issue at hand. Please review this carefully.
While it's good that you are trying to stop some of this, I'm not sure this is the solution. I could see a case where if this rule was put in place then we'd have rival posters using names/abbreviations in normal threads (such as Ulala, Lafayette, ULL, etc) just to spite the Cajun fans because they know that the Cajun fans would get punished for correcting them.
Ultimately its up to us Mods to handle these things.

While we havent discussed it outright, In my personal opinion it seems to be becomeing a issue as perfect innocent threads are getting caught in the "Louisiana issue" cross fire.

We cant make a rule like this to be honest as that is discrimiating against posters.

Thank you.
If this is installed, this place will be a ghost town in the Fall.

It was a just a thought. Good point though.
That would be kinda funny for Tech to get our own smack talk section. But you do have a point and I am just as guilty of stirring the pot about it.
I am all for it if you can get it done. I don't post much and a lot of the reason is that too many of these threads turn into silly mudslinging, childish BS and at times goes well beyond the "smack talk" one would expect. I swear by some of the posts that go on this board, you would think it is a bunch of middle school boys who post and not adults as most of us appear to be. Then again, this is the internet!!
Thank you for your input '05, however, that rule really isn't the answer.

Let me say this, your Mod staff is aware of this issue. For the time being, I want to encourage the Louisiana fans to remain calm and not be so reactionary. I also would like everyone to be respectful of the Cajun fans who consider this issue to be very important. Knowing that, you should make it a point to "be a pal" and help everyone out by avoiding using the ULL (etc.) moniker.

The Moderator staff will handle these posts as they come. One thing that can help us monitor any problems is if you, the membership, would PM all the Mods when something comes up that you feel needs our attention. This will result in the most prompt response.

Thanks guys. 04-cheers
oh, and to take care of someone instigating something (i.e. techsters doing something), I think I would trust the mods to see when someone is making a deliberate attempt at that and banish them and give the responders a free pass.

Even if this isn't the solution and it very well may not be a good one, I feel that our collective hands have been forced to do something about this even if it is not the solution I have presented.
Keep in mind that some of us just want to talk good college sports. The mudslinging does get out of control. At this point we are all schools on the outside looking in as far as the AQ schools are concerned.
Your Moderator Staff will have an official statement on this matter soon.

I agree with you. When a thread turns I just back out and don't say a thing. While there are a few ULM fans that I know who do post and fire back, there are many more who don't come over here and post strictly because of this very issue. It is sad that too many time this board has become a place not to talk about sports but to turns into some p*ssing contest.

Please September hurry up and get here!!
College sports in a way is a giant pi**ing contest. My wife is a ULM grad and she gives me fits with the morning sports section. Without the rivalries no one would watch. It goes too far on a lot of boards and good posters go elsewhere when it turns to hate.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN LOUISIANA FOOTBALL!!!

Listen, this is a board with fans from every school in the Conference. This is not a one team board. Because of those two facts you are going to have a lot of friction between members if for no other reason than because of on-field competition. Personally, I enjoy the good-natured smack very much. I find nothing at all wrong with teasing one another out of fun and comraderie.

Now, sometimes the smack can get thick, at which time we Mods either shut it down or move the thread. But we try to run as open a board as we can. If we were oppressive against points of view and good-natured smack talk this place would look more like Nazi Germany and less like a place to interact and have fun with fans from around the League...and no one wants that.

If you want a board where everyone pulls for the same team and gets along, then I recommend you go to your team's board. If you want to mix it up, represent your program with the greater SBC fanbase, and risk a boo boo from time to time then this is your place.
Another forum I post on simply starts dishing out the warnings/bans after someone makes 2 or 3 off-topic posts in a row. I think that would allow the name corrections (is it really necessary?) without giving a free pass into taking the thread completely off topic.

This is really all we've been asking.

I've been asking politely (mostly in vain) that if a poster can't or won't use UL, then they use "CAJUNS" when referring to athletics. For the most part, I've tried to use "Cajuns" in an effort to encourage its use and to try to avoid the inevitable pissing match that unfortunately the use of "UL" causes.
The smack talk is why most people, me included, come to boards like this. I also come here to get information and share ideas about where each school is going. It just get frustrating to have to go through 3 pages of BS to get back to the topic at hand. This is a great board and I think the admns do a great job, just keep up the good work.
