I used to live in East Tennessee awhile. Sevierville, Gatlinburg are nice. Pigeon Forge is fun. I stayed in both and have tons and tons of stuff to see and do. Sevierville is just kinda quaint. Nothing really there. Townsend is nice and you can head up to Cade's Cove. Chattanooga, Tennessee is another place I used to live besides having lived in Knoxville and Memphis. Chattanooga has a lot of the Lookout Mountain tourists stuff, plus the Tennessee Aquarium is wonderful, and the IMAX theatre. In June, in Chattanooga, every year thay have the big Riverbend Festival. This year it's June 10th-18th. A lot of good restaurants and parks and sight seeing to do there. (Alan Jackson will actually be at Riverbend this year, along with the Beach Boys, a band I know personally the Dirty Guv'nah's who are from Knoxville).

I cannot think of anything else off the top of my head. The Tri-Cit area (Johnson City, Bristol, and Kingsport) doesn't really have awhole lot of stuff. But I always enjoyed driving through Gatlinburg or through the Maryville into the mountains and just driving and taking pictures, a lot of trails and stuff to do.

But if you want some city activities to go along with your mountain trips, I'd choose Chattanooga. I loved it there and they have done so much to revitalize the downtown area. It's been awhile since I've been and no idea what new has been done, but it's a lot of fun.
I'd go to Asheville, the kids would love Gatlinburg. Have a nice holiday.
Telluride, CO. Been there 5 times. Gatlinburg is overrated.

I've never been, but have wanted to go to Watauga lake (TN) since seeing it featured on WKNO's "Tennessee waterways."

I have a few friends with houses in Telluride...it's not your usual destination. I've tried convincing them to let me use their places.

IF you have friends with a vacation home in Telluride, they definitely aren't hurting for money. Last year was the first in 6 years I didn't go to the Blues and Brews festival.
Yeah, they both have family money you and I would kill for. One of them owned (and sold) a few car dealerships. The other had a father who was president of a large pharmaceutical company and he was an executive at one of the world's largest engineering firms.

Rough life for both sets of friends. I don't think I'll ever get there unless the wife does and drags my sorry ass along for the ride.
