Darren Washington, a 6'10 early signee from the Ramsey era has asked for his release from EMU per Steve Bells info center.

Could be some changes to the current roster. Almost aways is when a new guy takes over.

Washington and Tenhamsel both did not have good senior years last seaosn with Tenhamsel from Caledonia averaging 12.9 ppg (hurt a lot) and Washington from AA Gabriel Richard averaging only 9.3 ppg
Is 9.3 ppg really bad for a big man?

A lot of big men, except those who simply dunk on shorter men, don't do well in high school. They just don't have the coordinated moves yet. (hint: they should be redshirted in college).

I remember a big man from Cleveland who had a sub-par senior year and a good EMU career. Dobbins.

P.S. where would Washington go?
P.S. Doesn't sound like Bell thinks he is not a decent prospect.

Have you seen Washington play ? Exactly like emu steve said, he is a RAW big man who has put on a lot of size in recent years. I think he is somebody that can succeed on the MAC level by the time he is a Junior. Dont underestimate the loss of him here, I think that is a big blow.
Big Blow - why does he want out? Coaching change?

P.S. I HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY- CAN REBOUND AND BLOCK SOME SHOTS BUT WAS ONLY THJE 3RD OR 4TH LEADING SCORER ON A SUB .500 TEAM. I AM AWARE THAT MOST BIG MEN TAKE AWHILE TO DEVELOP THEIR OFFENSIVE GAME, WE'LL SEE. I DO KNOW CLEVELAND STATE RECRUITED HIM HARD IN THE FALL.

SOMEONE INFLUENCED HIS WANTING OUT - KEEP IN MIND WE HAVE 3 6'10 PLAYERS ALREADY ON THE ROSTER, ANEMLY, HARRIS (6,9) BALKEMA AND JANTEN.

WISH HIM WELL!
I'm not as convinced as some of the others that this young man would have really ever contributed. I hope I'm wrong, but everyone I've talked to has said he was a real project.

I wish him nothing but the best and hope that he goes on to prove anyone who has ever doubted him wrong.
Sidenote...
"... from the Ramsey era..." makes it sound so long ago...
He hasn't even been gone for a month.

Without getting geeky about recruiting and player development, I've tried to ascertain at what year in school kids with good ability can contribute.

E.g., a SG can contribute quickly. A WR can also. PGs not quite a fast. OL and DL say their 2nd year (preferable after a redshirt year). QBs take some time but not as much as a 6 ' 10" 230 hoops big man who needs to make his moves. Some of them (the 6' 10" - 7' 0" may take 3 or even 4 years to develop). The kid Zeke at Akron is a classic case of a talented kid who is developing his offense very slowly. I think there have been some talented centers at MSU who never really developed.

As Rip is suggesting, a lot of these big guys have growth spurts and suddenly a different player and a different body.

Curious if Washington is another J. Harris????

You can never have too many Jamell Harris's. He is a terrific low post defender, especially weakside. Murphy had a rep at Cuse of vastly improving the offensive play of forwards and post players. Hopefully he can help Jamell, who's still very raw with the ball in his hands (he is good with tip slams though). As far as I can see, he's the only guy on this roster (MAYBE...and that's a huge MAYBE...Thompson as well) who has all MAC potential. I hope Murphy can bring the best out of him.
Another example of the point you all are making would be Ryan Prillman. Averaged about 2ppg his freshman year, 9ppg his sophomore and junior year then. 17ppg his senior year...
I get it

If Murphy had a "rep" at Syracuse for coaching post players such news either never made it to ears of Washington or else it did not impress him very much.

BTW here is an article on Mlive: "New Eastern Michigan basketball coach Rob Murphy talks philosophy, influence and staff"

Sorry to hear Washington requested his release. He won't have a problem finding another Div I offer, he has a good work ethnic good grades other teams will see the upside.
Just FYI -

Shroder senior center Jalen Billups verbally committed to play at Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday night, according to Shroder basketball coach Thomas Owens.

Billups, who is 6-foot-6, also considered Eastern Michigan, Indianapolis, Lincoln Memorial and Bethune-Cookman.

Probably recruited by Ramsey. Is EMU the only D1 school in that list. Wonder if Rams offered that kid.
I doubt it, kid had some academic issues as I understand it! Div II schools have different eligibility requirements than DIV I. He probably wouldn't have been eligible if offerred by EMU.
On Sunday, 6-10 Ann Arbor (Mich.) Gabriel Richard senior Darren Washington will take an unofficial visit to WSU after receiving a release from his Eastern Michigan letter of intent earlier this week.

“His first priority is getting to Dayton (for a visit),” said Gabriel Richard coach Pete Schoch.

Washington, who averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks for a team that played a difficult schedule, received as many as 10 scholarship offers following his EMU release, Schoch said.

Might want to learn how to spell Shayne's last name correctly: Shayne Whittington

BTW - I met Shayne about 3-4 years ago when he was a junior in high school. A VERY polite and well spoken young man. Great high school GPA. Was a three sport HS athlete (6'9'' Wide Receiver as a junior!!)

He was very interested in EMU.

I attempted to connect him to Ramsey's staff (something I have done on very rare occasions over the years, personally connecting prospects to coaching staffs, especially in EMU Football and EMU Men's Basketball) and was totally rebuffed in a curt one sentence reply from Ramsey's coaching staff:

(Paraphrased): "Thank you but we are well aware of our recruiting needs."

Was kind of hard to help such arrogance...

Shayne ended up signing with WMU.
Time to give up on Washington....Lets move on to the next.....
