just trying to gauge everyone's opinion on this hire.
There are so many unknowns with this situation that I don't think any of us can give an answer. Can "Wait and see" be an option?

yeah, you're absolutely correct. none of us know how this will play out. but, it's fun to see what everyone thinks right after finding out about hiring Murphy.
I voted for the 2nd choice: "He'll make us competitive..."

My prediction: It took Rob two years to produce a winner at Crockett.

Two years to produce a winner at EMU.
How do I feel?
Underwhelmed.

My thoughts as well.

When I think the of the last four hires (Barnes, Boone, Ramsey, and Murphy), Murphy might have the best chance to be a 'pleasant surprise'.

Why?

Potentially the best recruiter, probably the best 'relater', maybe the best at developing big men, etc.

We have been down this road before. Assistant at high-profile program. I honestly believe we needed a person with head-coaching experience at a mid-major level. Someone who understands the many different hats he will have to wear -- many more issues and different areas that he will have to deal with than at a larger program where there are more personnel, more funds available.

We needed a coach who has had to sell a program ... not pitch a program that sells itself. EMU is a tough sell right now. It's not like walking into a recruit's home as an assistant at Syracuse.

Respectivefully, but maybe we are 'fighting the last war' as generals are often accused of doing.

Ramsey seems like the type of coach who could NOT build a program which was in the duldrums.

Murphy seems very different. Even though it was high school what he did at Crockett was amazing. He seems to have great person skills, high energy, youth, etc. I think he might have very good 'technical' (teaching) skills.

On paper they seem to be from the same mold.

Personwise I think they are very, very different.

I think Jim Boeheim gave clues that he really liked Murphy and seemed to publically almost hint that he hoped the EMU deal wouldn't come to fruition. (his statement that Murphy hasn't agreed to a contract yet. Kind of holding out hope). I don't think I've ever heard a HC almost publically praying that his asst not get a new job.
Kudos from Boeheim. This appears to be very sincere and telling.
