Here's a new update from a reliable/accurate source. Several good names on this list, and a few bad ones (e.g., Smith, Alexander):

Surprised Jim Boylen isn't on that list, especially considering he's openly said he's interested in the job.

While I'm still hoping it is either Mann or Jones (especially Mann), I understand why Gragg would want to go after someone with head coaching experience, especially when there are a few out there that applied for the job. However, I think the most important thing in rebuilding this program is re-creating a recruiting pipeline with Detroit (sad that we have to use the word "re-creating" when Detroit is about 20 minutes away) and Gragg has admitted it's incredibly important. Second to that is understanding the nuances of MAC basketball. Mann is experienced in both areas. Even without head coaching experience at the D1 level, he seems like the best choice to me.
Jay Smith???? i would not be thrilled about that. the asst at Oakland sounds kinda weak as well.

Stan Joplin is an interesting name. why did he leave toledo? was he fired? better job elsewhere? was it that betting scandal a few years back?
E. Michigan Contacts TSU About Harvey - Harvey is from Benton Harbor, Michigan and was an assistant at Eastern Michigan from 1995-1999.

(Current head coach...)
The only list that matters is Gragg's. Anything else is just pure speculation.

FWIW, the guys on WTKA did speak well about Alexander. Seemed like they were attributing much of UMs success this year to him.

Hard to put much stock in a guys bio of he's only been an assistant. An assistant only needs to juggle about 3 objects. A HC needs to juggle at least 6 - recruiting, academics, staffing, scheduling, strategy, and media. To be successful a HC must either be great at one or two aspects of the job or at least very good at most aspects.
Harvey is a Barnes cronie! I believe he had issues when at Missouri as well. Hard for me to believe EMU contacted him. WHY?

Agree 100%.

IF he gets an interview I'll be the most shocked man in America.

I think Gragg is trying to p*ss off that certain poster from M-Dead. 03-nutkick

Seriously, what it MIGHT mean is that Dr. Gragg just might interview 5 current and former HCs, e.g., Harvey, Boylen, Lickliter, Fife, and maybe Joplin.

Well, none of us have Gragg's list, so I pass on the best info I can.

OF COURSE IT'S SPECULATION. This is a GD message board. Without speculation, we should just shut down this site along with the rest of the internet.

Well, you should give props to me, because I called it when everyone else was saying it's impossible.

If EMU contacted TSU, then he is a very serious candidate. Of course, that doesn't mean he'll get the job, but they're kicking tires. And I can see why...

Assistant under Snyder and Braun, knows the MAC, Michigan recruiting ties...What else is there?
Tony got thrown under the bus by dookie Quin Snyder(what a class act, ha ha) for recruitng violations that Snyder committed. Tony was a good assistant while here.

I think Harvey is a financially sound pick to take over the head spot. He wont be my first choice (I'll keep Fife and Boylen as my top two) but Harvey might make the most financial sense to bring in. He can recruit and he has already shown the ability to turn around a program. Like Fife, he is fairly new at this head coaching thing...and EMU would be a great stepping stone for him to build his future.
I just got a thought to put this Harvey, Boylen, etc. being publically stated to be interested into context (I assume most ADs would like to conduct the search in secret not on the front pages of newspapers).

Gragg will probably interview say 5 candidates.

Seems like he'll conduct the interviews with an open mind and not pre select a candidate.

Sounds like all of the candidates will pretty much understand that there is a big, solid field and that they'll need to interview well AND be realistic in their salary demands.

I woudln't read today's (or yesterdays or Mondays) paper and pre-ordain a favorite.
Steve Bell reports that Dane Fife may in the running for the Purdue job.

I thought Painter is the Purdue coach????

I thought he re upped for a bunch of years.
I thought the same about the Purdue situation. Need some clarification here on Fife unless Bell is talking about the top asst job at Purdue?

All of this is getting more and more confusing with Harvey's name in the picture and now this about Fife. Our new HC at EMU may be eventally be a mystery man.

P.S. Montgomery from No Il just received a committment (today is LOI day) from an all state Saginaw Guard, namely Travias Ford, one of the best PG's n the state of Michigan. He will be recruiting Michigan hard.

Our new hc and staff better be able to recruit Michigan, doubt that we will bring in any players during the April/May signing period, they'll all have committed by the time our new coach is up and running.
I too wonder about going from top man at IPFW to assoc head coach at Purdue????

Montgomery apparently is a good recruiter. Ramsey isn't.

He might have been dynamite at EMU. The EMU committee which recommended Ramsey blew it. 20-20 hindsight.
AGREE THEY BLEW IT ON MONTGOMERY, LETS HOPE THEY DON'T BLOW IT OR I SHOULD SAY LETS HOPE GRAGG DOESN'T BLOW IT ON THIS ONE. NEED TO GET THE RIGHT GUY AND STAFF IN PLACE SO THE PROGRAM CAN GET RIGHTED ASAP.

HOPEFULLY BY NEXT MONDAY WE SHOULD KNOW IF NOT SOONER.

Dennis,

Just hope you realize this could be a 3 year rebuild job ala football. 03-shhhh

That is why I don't mark a coaching search in terms of days because, quite frankly, 3 weeks vs. 2 weeks isn't going to make much, IF ANY, difference.

In football, because of the single signing period, it is important to have a HC on board ASAP (but still not short circuit the hiring process), that doesn't hold in hoops because November is the primary signing period (while April is usually secondary).

There is no spring practice for hoopsters and who knows some may go home for the spring and summer terms.
