USA Today released their list of NCAA athletic budgets for the 2010 year.

Here's now the MAC lines up. I would list the revenues as well, but they usually don't mean anything because most of that comes from university support or student fees, which aren't really revenue but do serve the purpose of making it look like the programs aren't hemorrhaging money.

Miami $25,604,474.00
EMU $24,635,531.00
Akron $24,498,336.00
CMU $24,104,699.00
WMU $23,233,399.00
Ohio $22,875,238.00
NIU $21,899,024.00
Toledo $20,021,956.00
Kent $19,446,680.00
BGSU $17,850,240.00
Ball State $17,347,944.00
Buffalo $16,973,585.00

Average: $21,540,925.50

Utah and Boise State spend $31,742,827.00 and $36,655,700.00, respectively.

Marshall spends $25,678,598.00. Temple isn't listed.

Frequently mentioned MAC Expansion candidates:
WKU spends $23,243,348.00 and MTSU spends $20,800,017.00
Stony Brook spends $20,153,246.00 and UMass spends $25,229,901.00
Illinois State spends $15,923,568.00 and Delaware spends $31,902,322.00
Appy State spends $16,185,310.00 and YSU spends $11,842,751.00
I've always felt BG got more bang for the buck than anyone. jmo

they do, haven't you heard of their little std problem?
Not surprised Buffalo is at the bottom. The New York State budget is such a mess and I don't think it is getting better anytime soon.

Yeah, but if you look at the "revenue" they report, UB makes $8 million more than they spend. So they make about $25m but only spend under $17m. $17.4m of the revenue (more than they spend) is from institutional support and student fees. That doesn't even count ticket revenue, donations, TV/NCAA/MAC payouts, or anything else like that.

So where's all that extra money going?

There are some oddball figures year to year that can't be correct:

Coaching salaries, benefits, and bonuses paid by the university and related entities:

'08-'09: $3,641,814.84
'09-'10: $0.00

Coaching other compensation and benefits paid by a third party

'08-'09: $140,649.51
'09-'10: $0.00

Support staff/administrative salaries, benefits and bonuses paid by the university and related entities

'08-'09: $4,459,525.90
'09-'10: $0.00

So, we aren't compensating anyone in athletics? 01-wingedeagle There's where the numbers are off. We've been in the Top 3 in MAC budgets in recent years, and we are still there.
Temple's athletics budget is $28,000,000.

I'm sure some these will go down after the budget cuts in the state of Ohio. Some schools are looking at a 15 to 18% cut across the board as a University.

Not according to the 2010 Excellence in Management Cup. Didnt even crack the top 25. Kent, CMU, and Ohio all placed top 15.

Why does nobody look at the line items? UB's budget report is missing the salaries for coaches and department employees..

psst, post #7? 03-wink

Though, this thread was rolling along much further with the UB speculation. But now, instead of "Why is UB spending so little of its revenue?", we can return to the long-standing "Why hasn't UB won more sports titles with its higher expenditures?" question.

Never! Per a Coach Quinn tweet yesterday, it looks like they are resolved to winning hardware, sustained on the drive for the goal alone!

Meeting with all of the UB Head Coaches this morning....UNITED and FOCUSED on bringing championships to Buffalo!
This is further reason why Marshall and Temple belong in the MAC for all sports. Their budgets would allow them to be at the top end of the conference. That 28,000 AND 25,000 would not rank at the top of CUSA. MAC atleast doen't have a runway arms race. Even Boise State despite their success don't spend that much more.

We have less than zero interest in joining the MAC for all sports. There are plenty of BCS schools with budgets in the 40s. That is what we aspire to do; not put everything in the MAC and be at the top. We'd much prefer to have the lowest budget in a BCS conference than the highest in the MAC and so would every other MAC school.
Honestly I think there are very few people that want to see Marshal ever again.
And less that want to see Temple now.
