I just moved here a couple of weeks ago from Baton Rouge to take a new job. The day I moved here was only the 2nd time I've been to Memphis, the first being when I came for my interview.

I live on the east side and I know about Beale (blah), and some decent older crowd bars (I'm 27) and a few good places to eat but I'm looking for some other stuff to do...what about shopping, younger crowds, stuff to do during the day on the weekends when I'm not at work, local favorite restaurants, etc.

Also, being born and raised in Louisiana, I'm a huge baseball fan and look forward to taking in some redbirds games and I hear the field and the general atmosphere is one of the best experiences in Minor League Baseball. What about Tiger baseball? Do many people get out to experience those games? I know it won't be anything like the LSU baseball craziness I'm used to, I just love the game and enjoy college baseball.

I know this is long but thanks for reading and for any suggestions you may have. God bless and G(eaux)o Tigers..both kinds 04-cheers
I don't presently live there, but hang out awhile and I'm sure you get a ton of responses. The Memphis Zoo is awesome, if you like that kind of thing. Caution: If you bring up BBQ, this will turn into a BBQ thread.
Don't poo on Beale Street after only being here two weeks during March. I was in the French Quarter in April 2007 and it was a dead place.

Try Flying Saucer downtown for a younger crowd. Don't know about the one in Cordova. Also, if you have not locked into a place to live, check out downtown before making a decision.

FedExPark for Tiger baseball is fun but probably not what you are used to in the SEC. Redbirds games are great in AutoZone Park.
Stay tuned. I feel about 2, maybe 3 pages in the making.

Not pooing on Beale Street lol I'm just not much on tourist drinking destinations. I like both saucer locations, I've been to the one in cordova several times, its closer to home.

I don't really expect an SEC type college baseball atmosphere, most SEC clubs don't have an atmosphere anywhere close to an LSU crowd...Like I said, I really enjoy college baseball and I like to see teams I wouldn't normally get to see.

I definitely don't want this to turn into a BBQ thread though, I haven't had anything bad since I've been here so there is no use in talking about that 02-13-banana Thinking more along the lines of good burgers, sushi and higher quality restaurants..not chains. Also, stores with solid beer selections would be appreciated.
also, info on any malls or shopping centers would be appreciated.
welcome ! My Dad was born and raised in New Orleans....my Mom is a Tulane alum....relatives all over Louisiana. 2 cousins played football for LSU and their Dad was a football coach at Northwestern State. Actually there are a fair number of transplants to Memphis after Katrina...came here to flee and stayed. Hope you learn to love Memphis. I'm old and vegetarian and a non-drinker so no recommendations from me but just wanted to welcome you here. Hope you check out our football, baseball and basketball.....we are a basketball school, duh.
Welcome, glad you're here. My second favorite college team has always been LSU.

Wolfchase mall and it's surrounding areas. Oak Hall mall in E. Memphis and it's surrounding area. Collierville mall and surrounding area. Fed Ex park is great and you'd enjoy it. Zoo is great. Tiger basketball games are the best. Both men and women. Football would appreciate your support as well. LOL!

Uh, food.........gosh, where to start. There are so many great places to eat. Just start trying spots.

I'd suggest Hueys and Kooky Kanooks for burgers. Don't visit high end sushi bars so....... and there's a whole thread about steaks. LOL!
Try Huey's for a good burger. There are plenty around but not a chain. Local ownership. Listen to sports 56 from 8-9 in the morning for good restaurant reviews. 03-lol

There is a little store on Central and Parkway with excellent gyro's and beer selection. Young Street Deli in the Cooper Young are of midtown is good. Vanelli's deli on Farmington in Germantown is a must. Order a sandwich and nothing from the back kitchen. Trust me.

Jim's Place is great. Belmont Grill and Half Shell are good too.
Thanks for the welcomes, y'all...Everyone I've met has been so hospitable and helpful so far, I've hardly had to buy a drink anywhere I've gone...really a pleasant surprise, I can't say enough about how nice everyone has been...MUCH more easy going than Baton Rouge, they don't call us fiery cajuns for no reason I suppose.

I look forward to trying out some of these food recommendations, I've tried a few places that I like...half shell, central bbq, Gus' fried chicken (are you KIDDING me?) butcher shop.

One other thing, I'm in the market for a new TV and other than the usual suspects like Best Buy, Costco, Sams, etc...are there any good locally owned places where I might find a good deal? Cowboy Maloneys was my go to in baton rouge and I would like to buy local if I could to avoid any further feeding of the beast.
My Dad was a very very good cook when he was on this planet.....especially cajun cookin'.....advice....NO ONE in Memphis knows how to make good red beans & rice...NO ONE. Don't order them in any restaurant. I have actually spit them back out before. 03-lmfao
I know better than that...Someone i was with the other day ordered gumbo and i gave her my.."do you know where you are" speech. 03-lol i won't even order a po-boy here because I know the bread won't be correct...i was home all last week and got my fill of crawfish, gumbo, cous cous and po boys so I'll be ok for a while.

a grew up on andouille sausage gumbo, jambalaya, oyster dressing, stuffed crabs, bread puddin' and po boys...my Dad always took all the soft white inside out of his french bread and then filled it up with shrimp or oysters or whatever.....man oh man....good stuff.
oh yeah...even called my Grandma...Ma-Moo.

good start but must add Leonard's.
If you haven't gotten cable here yet, don't do it. Comcast blows. Do yourself a favor and get satellite or at&t.
