Nice try. You can't cause trouble over here, housefly. None of us give a damn about anything. We're mellow.

Seriously, it makes no sense. Aren't there like 20 interpretations or versions? Snakes and apples and big wooden canoes are supposed to explain the meaning of life?

I never talk religion or politics w/ anyone, and I'm careful about sports.

The book came out amidst so much hype, but after I'd finished it, I flipped back through it thinking I surely must have unknowingly fallen asleep while reading and missed many chapters. That was it? That was all? I never bothered to watch the movie.

I couldn't stand "The Da Vinci Code." It was simply awful. It felt like the storyline to a cheesy PC adventure game, only dumber.

TBill, haven't read that particular Zelazny, sounds interesting. But I agree with you about Harry Turtledove, more's the pity. I loved Guns of the South so much I was telling anyone and everyone who would listen, even total strangers in line at the bank and whatnot. Harry's brilliant, and a history professor who knows his stuff, so I'm always willing to sit at his feet and learn and be entertained at the same time. But I agree that his later trilogies are re-regurgitated and filled with unnecessary fluff just to stretch them. Hard times, Harry? Hate to see a really good writer stoop so low.

Guns of the South was great, no doubt. And the first three in the World War series, what a great idea that was! Harry was actually very active on the AOL Heinlein board back then, and he was great to read. But jeez did his later stuff tank.

Night is my favorite Zelazny, except for Nine Princes in Amber. Funny, fast, everything you could want from the guy. Damn, he died too young. I met Ray Bradbury at DragonCon in 98 and he was old back then, but one morning at breakfast the table next to us had Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen and Harlan Ellison.

Wow!! Ray Harryhausen is a legend. And I'd love to have cocktails with Harlan Ellison. I bet he's a hoot. Ray Bradbury is one of my favorites. I don't know how to explain it, he just sees things differently from the rest of us. He was, I suppose, in the same "literary guild" as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke (although I guess you could argue that Clarke doesn't even belong there - ha!) and yet he stood apart. The Martian Chronicles is a classic, but there was something "dark" about Bradbury too... even his science fiction had something of a Lovecraftian feel to it.

I read the first one and a half books of the Atlantis trilogy and put it down. Just lost interest. The first book was terrific, but I really felt he should have stopped there.

I rather enjoyed all of Dan Brown's books. Really liked Deception Point.

Deception Point is a good read. IMO Brown's best book is Angels and Demons; makes the Davinci Code look like Goodnight Moon.

I'll have to check that one out. I did like Angels and Demons much better than DaVinci code. The new one "The Lost Symbol" is a neat subject with the Freemasons but don't waste your time. It's forced and contrived.

Thanks for the tip. It's been on my to-be-read mountain for a while but I can't seem to open it and begin.

Bradbury is a gentleman above all else, just a genuinely nice man. Ellison is...well, I saw both the good and the bad Harlan. At Saturday's signing he stood there for 5 hours signing anything and everything put before him, saying the hell with the signing limits. Sunday he was a complete a**hole to everyone around him.

Before I forget, if you like alternate military history, you need to find the two books by Douglas Niles & Michael Dobson, "Fox on the Rhine" and "Fox at the Front." Basic premise: the July 20th bomb plot works and Hitler is killed. Himmler takes over, Rommel is not forced to commit suicide. The Russians are bought off to leave the war (and the ingenious solution to how this happened is brilliant and plausible) and Rommel commands the Ardennes Offensive.

I gave it a whirl when it first came out. At this point Brown needs to branch out a bit. His niche is becoming less interesting.

OK, now you are just trying to show off.

I wasnt trying to show off. I speak Russian, and so I felt it would make the point of the fact that it's boring more valid because it didnt lose any of its boringness through translation. It was still mind-numbingly boring. I couldnt stay awake.

I'm going to put one more instance of boring in this so that it evens out.

Angels and Demons was a great read but what is up with him....
His other books are written nice but ... has he lost his edge
Was hoping "The Lost Symbol"would be a good return... is it
a tough read ......

not a tough read at all. I did enjoy the story, but there is something about his style that needs some updating. I can't exactly put a finger on it; maybe it's the plot outlines. Could also be that I read a few of his in a row.......maybe I burned myself out.

In fact, if you want to read a book that is intentionally written like a cheesy PC adventure game, try "7 Deadly Wonders" by Matthew Reilly. Really a lot of fun. The review I wrote back in 2006 described it as like reading a video game. If you like it, there are 2 sequels.
I am working on my first book... and yes i know , I do not have proper grammer and my
technical writing is bad , I have an Editor who is awesome , he told me keep pumping
out the idea's and we will fix them as we go. I have learned alot in the past year...
Nowhere near his skill but the Idea's keep coming...
Also in the works ,one huge graphic novel been in the works for 6 years....
so big may have to do it in a six part series.... but that is on hold....
Cant wait to get my first leather bound (1st )copy.... it shall go good with the rich
deep Cherry wood book shelf... lol... I wish I could throw out some of the story
to see what you guys think, but I am under a clause bah... legal crap is not fun
but writing has been flowing... even with technical errors.... I can't wait to
get done and go by the old school find that smarty English teacher and drop
off a first copy signed, to the kid who will amount nothing... I was too much of
a class clown.... but the storys keep flowing....
P.S. it may go down as one of the worst books in history ... lol or not...

proper place.... Me not so much but I do have constant Idea's and
I write pretty basic .... and yes I use . ? ! " I guess it was exciting
to find someone willing to put up with me and my crazy Idea's for
ficton. I love writing on a msg board cause im free........ to place
dot's, scrabbly writing ,of course i could take a class but he has
a Masters seems like a waste to take the course, I have been
rethinking it... but I want to tell the storys that are logged in my
noggin so I may continue to work on more story's and he handles
the technical writing but I have heard him scream, why would you
put that there.... so I will continue to work with him LOL!!!!!!

I wish I would have finished 1st year of college...... to any youngsters
please pay attenion in english class... I did not.
