Awesome!!! 04-cheers

Sounds like a great hire!
I just watched the press conference and I am more excited about Huskie Basketball than I have been in years.
Montgomery has such good qualifications. Why was he our third choice?
NBC 5 Chicago just had Montgomery clip from the presser.. He repeated NIU sleeping giant. MM came across well. NIU BB HUGE step forward.

I love this pick, great job Compher.
methinks he was the 1st choice...
Did you see this comment on the story?

I feel better about this hire now that I know how Boowie feels. I think Boowie is on the other board now. Can anyone confirm?

I do too. If you go back and read the posts, it was mentioned that we might not have a coach until after the final 4. Which schools out of the names we were looking at were on teams that were possibly going to go that far? 2. Lusk and Montgomery. So it was most likely one of those 2. When Lusk apparently dropped out, it was kind of apparent that we got the man we wanted in Montgomery and didn't have to go for the second choice. Of course, this is just my opinion on the subject no way to really prove this.

Well, if you watched the press conference, I sure don't think so. Compher was directly asked the question if the job was offered to someone else first and he chose to side step the question. He said it was only important to get the right fit and they found it with Montgomery. By the way he answered, I think it is quite clear that someone was offered the job before MM (my guess is the Gonzaga guy).

Clearly, I do not think he was the first choice. Really not important though, as it is just important that he be the right choice.
I don't think it really matters if he was the first choice. Not like Ozzie Guillen was the first choice for the White Sox, he won a world series, Lovie Smith wasn't the first choice for the Bears and he took them to a super bowl.

Once you actually sit down and talk to the guys, your opinion can change quite a bit. As long as the guy seems happy to be here, is a good fit and you think he'll do a good job, who cares who the first choice was?
his shoe fits NIU.

We all know that Doeren was hired to coach football but for those less familiar with NIU athletics, the distinction should have been included in the article by its author.

picky picky picky but it was key information omitted.

A guy like Korcek would likely also recognize the lack of clarity.

Agree 100%. I think we had several good choices to pick from and would have been in a good situation with any of the 5-6 names being thrown around at the end. Finding the guy who seemingly really wants to be here who Compher also really wanted is a good thing! So let's move on and get behind him and our Huskies!!!
Anytime I hear in world of sports or elsewhere the expression "sleeping giant," I cringe believing most such giants more often than not remain asleep.

Not exactly sure either what constitutes a sleeping giant or when one is determined to be fully awakened.

What makes NIU a sleeping giant? Has the giant ever been awake previously?

Name me a team and when any awakened sleeping giant in sports has lived up to the expectations.

How did the expression come into being and pop culture anyways, a fairy tale?

It's an enigma and figure of speech filled with intrigue and wide open to interpretations.

Look at Wisconsin Football pre- Barry Alvarez. I think many would say Barry Alvarez woke the sleeping giant.

In terms of college basketball, something like a Gonzaga or Butler come to mind. They weren't asleep to the level NIU is in a coma, but Coach Few and Coach Matta "woke" up the potential for them to be national powers every year. I don't ever expect NIU to be a regular national power in the main sports of basketball or football, but we could be a giant in terms of regularly competing for the MAC title and an NCAA birth like the Kent States, Akrons, etc. do lately. Maybe even more? Could we get crazy and think that NIU could even be an at-large bid caliber team some day? Get something like a 9th seed? That would be "Giantesque".

You are right. It is open to interpretation and means practically nothing to me in specifics. Wake us up into the good first, then we will talk Giant later!

those two programs show you what you can do when a coach knows how to put a team together, coahes the heck out of them and teaches defense. Neither program get parade all americas. I bet their players were very lightly recruited
WI in football and Butler in bball have rarely been asleep- or in a coma like has NIU bball - too very long.

Perhaps both WI and the Zags in bball fit the definition more closely.

Point being it's more rare than common for a sports giant to awaken ...while CHINA is a classic example internationally.

Here is to the hope that Montgomery is the shock needed to defibrillate Huskies , and I dont think of NIU as a GIANT having gone dormant or a program with enormous capabilities to become a giant. The eternal Land of the Giants is sparsely populated by approximately 50 to 75 bball programs including those on the fringe like Xavier, BYU, Gonzaga, etc. What makes it so much fun to follow is when the George Masons, Kents, MiamiOs, Butlers and Valpos occasionally sling rocks into eyes of the Giants.

Winning the MAC and qualifying for the NCAA is not giagantic IMHO but it is a truly giant step forward to be made given how buried the giant has been.

Regardless, I like the imagery and ambitions expressed by the Full Monty.

Well said. Whose first choice are we talking about? The AD's, the players', the majority on this board, the minority on this board?
For every school that got it's first choice there's an example of it not working out; and for as many schools where a supposed "second choice" didn't work out, there's probably an example of one where it did work out. Hopefully not too quickly, but once we have some success, suddenly our guy is going to be someone else's first choice. Not to be a jerk, but some folks on this board wouldn't be the first choice if you polled their wives, girlfriends, etc. I know it shows I'm ancient, but wasn't there a song by a group named Bread with a lyric "how many came before doesn't matter as long as I'm the one?" I agree with you that, as of now, it "don't matter to me" if we're talking first, second or whatever choice. Let's hope Mark Madness will lead to some March Madness.

Yeah I thought he was the first choice until I watched the press conference. It was pretty obvious he wasn't after watching it.
