Of course, but the stated reason was academics, and there is an academic problem for three (4?) years running now. Hiring Matta would require the university to admit that this was more about winning than the staff's oversight of academics, something that would be foolish to do considering Ingle's (rumored) pending lawsuit over breach of contract.

I would be. It would demonstrate that the athletic department wasn't creative enough to look outside of the county, let alone the state. That's hardly a search, that's an appointment. And as earlier posters have suggested, it would indicate to me that it's a short-term hire that the new AD will have to vet and will potentially send Matta packing in a few years. While that may be a no-lose proposition for KSU (Matta succeeds and they look brilliant, or he fails and he was just "short-term" anyway...), it would show their willingness to sacrifice the next few years on an experiment.

Would I still support the team with Matta as coach? Absolutely. However, such a move would suggest that KSU hasn't quite yet "grown up" enough to treat these sports as the businesses they are, and I fear it doesn't bode well for how they'll handle football either.

OwlsFan, While I agree that this would be a pathetic attempt at patchwork, I believe that your statement about them treating this as a business is a little off base. The athletic departments hiring of Matta would be a complete business move. You bring the guy in and pay him penuts to clean up the academic issues and put together a semblance of an organized team. Then you bring in an AD (and this is where KSU's Main focus should be) who will let him go and bring in a more permenant solution. Whitlock and company are not the best candidates to be running a search committe, so they have to find a fix till the new AD can come in.

This is much better business sense then using Whitlock and company and their connections to bringing in a mediocre coach or assistant coach and paying him top dollar. As KB has said before hiring a coach is more about who you know then anything else. Then the coach would probably be fired later but the new AD anyways, but instead of 2 years down the road it will take 4-6 to give them the boot.

In my oppinion we should be contacting some of these Big East, ACC, SEC fires who were not strong enough to compete at that level, but showed competancy. If not that go with a retread like Barnes or seriously consider hiring Matta on a short term contract.
Would much rather have an excited ready to rock Matta (or young HC) that is ready to take on their first head coaching job then some old retread that is looking to supplement their retirement. We need someone that is going to come in and bring some excitement. It doesn't have to be a big name, but the guy we bring in has to have some energy ... not just a name.

Even though he beat VCU, Barnes is certainly not the answer.
I am not going to get really worked up about this until we get something more solid than an internet rumor
