UNLV, Gonzaga, Pre-Season NIT Highlight Stanford Men's Basketball Schedule
Cardinal hoopsters open Fall workouts (October 12)

Stanford, Ca - An appearance in the prestigious Pre-Season NIT, and a meeting with Gonzaga and Nevada-Las Vegas, highlights the 2002-03 Stanford's men's basketball schedule, announced today by Cardinal head coach Mike Montgomery.
Stanford opens the regular season on Nov. 18 (6:15 p.m.) in the Pre-Season NIT against Boston University at Maples Pavilion. If Stanford wins against the Terriers, the Cardinal would then host another NIT game on November 20 (7:30 p.m.) against either Xavier or St. Peter's. Xavier is considered a candidate to reach the NCAA Final Four. The Musketeers are ranked eighth in Lindy's Basketball magazine.

This will be Stanford's third appearance in the Pre-Season NIT. During the 1998-99 season, Stanford reached the championship game of the Pre-Season NIT at Madison Square Garden against North Carolina. The Cardinal reached the title game with wins over SMU, Southwest Missouri State and St. John's.

The Cardinal will face the Runnin' Rebels of Nevada Las Vegas for only the second time in school history at the Las Vegas Shootout (Dec. 21). This will be the second straight year that Stanford has played in the Shootout.

On Dec. 28, Stanford and Gonzaga will meet in the Pete Newell Challenge at the Oakland Arena. Gonzaga is ranked 18th in the Lindy's Basketball magazine, and 23th in Basketball News.

This year's Stanford Invitational (December 16-17) will include Pepperdine, Richmond, and Montana. The Cardinal will host Montana in the opening round.

Other home non-league games include Rice (November 24), St. Mary's (December 14), UC Irvine (December 19) and Yale (December 30).

Stanford opens the Pac-10 season on Saturday, January 4, at California.

Stanford will face several teams that will be nationally-ranked during the 2002-03 season. Arizona is ranked #1 in three national pre-season magazines (Street & Smith, Lindy's Basketball, Basketball News). The Wildcats will arrive at Maples Pavilion on Mar. 1. Oregon, the 2002 Pac-10 champions, are ranked as high as sixth in one national pre-season publication. Stanford will face the Ducks on Jan. 11. UCLA is ranked as high as eleventh in the pre-season polls. The Bruins have a date at Maples Pavilion on Jan. 23.

Stanford will again be a prominent team on national and local television. Seventeen games will be televised (8 on Fox Sports Net, 6 on KRON, 1 on ESPN, 1 on ESPN2, 1 on ABC).

Stanford, with ten lettermen returning from a 20-10 team, will open official practice on October 12 at Maples Pavilion. Practice will begin at 11:00 a.m. The practices are free and open to the public.

Weekday practices are scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
