PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State pulled out dramatic overtime victories over cross-state rival Washington in 1998 and 2000, but was unable to make it three-straight home wins over the Huskies Saturday, as the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie.

"It was a tale of two halves," WSU Head Coach Dan Tobias said. "I thought we controlled the first half, they did a good job in the second half, and the overtime was pretty even."

Shelby Brownfield got WSU on the board first in the 31st minute, scoring her first goal as a Cougar just 14 seconds after entering the match. Brownfield, a transfer from Connecticut, was originally slated to redshirt the 2002 season while recovering from a knee injury, but progressed ahead of schedule. The Snohomish, Wash., native took four shots on the day.

The Cougars made it a two-goal lead 13 minutes later as junior Kim Morgan rebounded a shot attempt by Rachel Rodrick and knocked it past Washington's All-American goalkeeper Hope Solo. It was Morgan's fourth goal of the season and second career goal against UW.

WSU took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but the Huskies would respond.

"We talked at halftime about playing smarter," Tobias said. "I think we just dropped back too much. Soccer is tough because you can't call a timeout to get everybody together."

UW's Clare Rustad cut the lead to one in the 73rd minute, converting a cross by Melissa Bennett for her first goal of the season.

The pair switched roles with just 3:09 remaining in the contest, as Bennett took a pass from Rustad and raced past a Cougar defender for the equalizer.

The afternoon match was marked by physical play, including three yellow cards, one by UW, and two for WSU. The overtime periods were no exception as neither team could establish the run of play.

Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin, starting in place of the injured Sara Leibowitz, was forced to make a save late in the second extra stanza, thwarting a shot by UW's Tina Frimpong.

WSU outshot UW 12-10, while the Huskies took nine corner kicks to just two for the Cougars.

"We are still undefeated in Pac-10 play," Tobias said. "It stings because it is a tie, but we are going to get ready for next week."

The tie brought WSU's season record to 7-4-2, and 1-0-2 in Pac-10 play. Washington is 7-4-3, 2-0-1 in conference.

The Cougars next opponents will be Stanford and California, Friday, October 25, and Sunday October 27.
