There indeed are 6 SoCal JUCOs who enrolled in January.

Pollard is one of the 20 announced today.

Marrow not listed. Why? I don't see Watson either.

Or Parker who is in school.

This class has enough DBs for two teams.

Grand total of 1 linemen.

I want to hear of the other kids (assume there are more then 20 including Garrett Parker, etc.)
Marrow is already listed on the roster as a red-shirt freshmen, so not part of this incoming class. http://www.emueagles.com/roster.aspx?path=football&

Then again, I see Pollard is already listed as well, so who knows...maybe someone can ask/call in during the coaches radio show today?

I am curious to know what happened to Watson. He was our earliest verbal commitment dating back to last August.

Chance that the weather is a reason why Watson is not on the list. If he was not able to get to a fax machine or scanner then he might not have sent it in yet.
I think there will be interchangeable positions among the DBs. Some may play slot, retune kicks, etc. Or simply be DBs.
One of the "new" names (at least to me) is Bronson Hill from Grand Rapids...looks like he tore his MCL last season: http://highschoolsports.mlive.com/news/a...mpionship/
Position breakdown from the release:
1 QB
3 RBs
2 TEs
4 Safties
5 CBs
1 WR
3 LBs
1 DE
Any predictions on who will contribute the most as a freshman??? I say Reese, Brumfield, and Reed.

Nice that most of the 8 JUCOs are already in class. They should all be high on the depth chart this season.

Going to be some fierce competition at DB.

Good RB depth finally. 3 freshmen plus Green, Sherrer, Welch, and Marrow (hope).
In the release English acknowledges that high school recruits are the ideal way to build a program. EMU far and away recruits more JUCOs than other MAC football team. And there is lack of Michigan instate recruits which has been discussed here before. We're more Eastern California than we are Eastern Michigan but I also agree we need to get the best players no matter where they come from.

I'm alittle disappointed in not getting high school LBs that could redshirt behind the JUCOs, I'm definitely happy with the DE prospect we have but we need some quality high school DL because next year our defensive line is filled with upper classmen. I see guys like Strange and Johnson redshirting as DB, maybe some will be moved to WR another area I wish we had more recruits. Allen, Scott and Reed give us many options to improve our return game. Because Payne left we also know have two backup QBs without any actual game experience, not ideal considering we have a running QB.

To me this ranks above the prototype English class because of guys like Reed, Cotton, Brumfield, Scott and Johnson. These guys had other Div I offers some Big Ten and definitely all had other MAC offers. If the JUCO recruits none of them highly recruited actually are on the opening day roster and ready to contribute that too would set this class apart from English's other two classes. English and his staff showed solid improvement with this class.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the conference is doing, we did improve others may have improved more.

I think all in all, this was a pretty decent class considering the current state of the program. I personally, would have liked to see 1 or 2 more players up front on both sides of the ball, but we did fill positions of need.
As for players that can step on the field right away, you have to look at any of the defensive backs that we recruited in this class. Any of them have an opportunity to get onto the field. To add to those players, I would say the running back out of PA could get carries, along with Tyler Allen out of Lansing.
No matter what team you are, signing day is ALWAYS a positive day for the program. It gives junkies like us the opportunity to be excited for the up-coming season...and spring ball (which is just around the corner 02-13-banana )
my thoughts:

I see a cake not completely baked.

This is 20 scholarships with presumably up to 5 not included for one reason or another.

I believe I heard something about a DL (?) transfer, might be from a small school. I don't know if someone was referring to Henderson.

I assume Parker will be announced.

I assume Watson will be announced.

I hope Marrow will be announced.

Also, look at the photo for senior day. I didn't see L. Thomas or Paopao. Are they possible medical redshirts?

I still hope that one scholarship is in English's back pocket for Glasgow, if he wants it.

I want to see the icing on this cake. :)
Another possible signee? A Rivals 3-star?

Gary Wooten:

Good get. Presume he'll grow into a weak side LB

RE says thay he expects to get the LOI's from 2 more young DL on Thursday.

I think it's safe to assume 1 is Watson.
The other... I'm not so sure on.

Was also intrigued by his comments on the three RB's.

Brumfield- Will play
Allen- Will be a receiver
And the kid from GR- If he can be one of the best backs he'll be a RB. Otherwise, he's going to come play for coach English. Sounds like he's going to become a safety to me.

I thought those were insightful comments about the RBs. RE also mentioned Sherrer and that if he's healthy he could be good. He also talked about him on WTKA. Also sounds like Reed is going to get an opportunity to be a KR/PR right away.

Interesting that when discussing the running game on this clip and on WTKA RE does not mention Marrow. I've got a feeling that that situation is not settled yet.

So basically....Watson, Marrow, and Parker can be included...plus those two defensive lineman ? And what about this Wooten character ? Did RE have anything to say today at his presser on him ?
Reading between the lines:

Watson, indeed, might be a DE candidate.

Make Marrow situation just might be up in the air. If things were cool he could have been announced yesterday.

I still wish we were more conservative on some of those late scholarships at RB and DB.

There are still a number of kids EMU was in on that are still uncommitted.

I do believe English/Snow took a 'long' view on building the secondary. There are rising seniors, new JUCOs and frosh.

They'll play the best players and maybe some frosh will get redshirted.

They could have a plan for '11, and '12 and '13 (could be Cotton, Strange, Scott, Reed (?), etc.) much like on the OL where there will be a seamless transition from the '10 to '11 OL with the redshirts blending in. (I'd assume coaches just love to redshirt OL and work them into the unit since OL function as a unit).
At halftime of the mens' game English came on and talk about his challenges with instate recruiting and the perception of EMU. One correction to his statement the previous coach did recruit Michigan despite EMU's losing reputation. There was one year not so long ago where EMU and CMU had an equal number of players in the top 60 Detroit News listings.

Again I understand every coach has his own recruiting strategy. I think English hopes the JUCOs put us over the top on the defensive side of the ball and in the winning season column. I hope he's right.
Anyone have an idea who the 2 mystery recruits (DL's) are that will repordedly sign today? Interesting!
