Baseball America’s top 30 Reds’ prospects
Posted by jfay 01/26/11, 12:40 pm

I just got Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. It lists the top 30 prospects for all 30 teams. Here’s the Reds’ list (the top 10 already appeared in a BA issue and I posted them earlier, so I’m just going to list them here):

1. LHP Aroldis Chapman

2. INF Billy Hamilton

3. C Devin Mesoraco

4. 1B Yonder Alonso

5. OF Yorman Rodriguez

6. C Yasmani Grandal

7. 3B Juan Francisco

8. SS Zack Cozart

9. INF/OF Todd Frazier

10. RHP Kyle Lotzkar

11. OF Ryan LaMarre: He was the second-round pick out of Michigan last year. Hit .282/.370/.396 in 60 games at Dayton last year. Struggled a bit after getting bumped to Lynchburg.

12. RHP Drew Cisco: Sixth-rounder last year. Grandson of Galen Cisco. He signed for a $975,000.

13. LHP Donnie Joseph: Third-rounder in 2009. Had 24 saves last year going from Dayton to Lynchburg to Carolina.

14. Chris Valaika: He acquitted himself well after his call-up last year.

15. RHP Daniel Corcino: The 20-year-old from Dominican sounds like a younger version of Johnny Cueto. Concino’s only 5-11 but he throws up to 94.

16. LHP Ismael Guillon: The 18-year-old Venezuelan struck out 72 in 57 innings in the Arizona Summer League.

17. SS Junior Arias: A 19-year-old from the DR. Signed for $330,000. Hit .287 in Arizona Summer League last year.

18. RHP Brad Boxberger: Supplemental first-rounder in ’09. Went 4-6 with a 3.18ERA at Lynchburg. But he got hit around after moving to Double-A (1-4, 8.49).

19. SS Didi Gregorius: Signed out of Netherland Antilles. His .273/.327/.379 at Dayton. Only 20 years old.

20. OF Dave Sappelt: He won the Southern League batting title by hitting .361 at Carolina. Sounds a lot like Chris Heisey — no great tools but puts up good numbers.

21. OF Kyle Waldrop: 12th-rounder last year. Signed to play football and baseball at South Florida.

22. INF Ronald Torreyes: He led the Venezuelan Summer League with a .390 average. Walked 23 times and struck out 11 in the VSL. Hit .349 in 18 games in the ASL after being promoted.

23. 2B Henry Rodriguez: He hit .307 with 14 home runs and 78 RBI in 124 games at Dayton.

24. 1B Neftali Soto: He was moved from shortstop to third to first. The Reds think he will hit.

25. RHP Sam LeCure: He pitched pretty well after his call-up. His problem is Reds have depth in the rotation.

26. RHP Jonathan Correa: Another young Dominican. Went 4-2 with a 2.06 in the ASL and 2-2 with a 5.00 for Billings.

27. RHP Daryl Thompson: He’s healthy again. The Reds thought enough of him to put him on the 40-man roster.

28. OF Juan Duran: The Reds signed him $2 million in 2008. Shot up 6-7. Hit .244 at Billings.

29. LHP Philippe Valiquette: Was drafted in 2004. Great arm, but spotty results.

30. OF Felix Perez: The Reds signed Cuban last year for $500,000. He’s 26. Hit .322 in 67 games last year.

No surprises.
I didn't know Daryl Thompson was still on the team. I thought the Reds traded him. I guess not.

I'm excited to see how Billy Hamilton does this year since he plays both 2B and SS.

Alot of people are excited about Thompson's resurgence.

I'm cautiously optimistic. He has a history of chronic problems with his throwing arm/shoulder.
And Marge thought scouts just sat around and watched games
I'd like to see them keep Thompson in the bullpen, also my thoughts on the list, Sappelt at 20, I think he should be higher, Boxberger was throwing up some gems and then suddenly he gets moved to the bullpen where he then was beat down like a dog, I guess he was reaching his inning limit when they made the move, I'd like to see him stay at starting instead of relieving, my breakout guy for 2011 is LaMarre, 5 tool guy with blazing speed

Yeah, Ryan just has a baseball name.

LaMarre. You can just see that printed on a baseball card.
