Solid signing. I'm not too confident in Janish at the plate. Sounds very similar to the Orlando Cabrera signing last year.
Yeah for 3 Mil that is a solid pickup.
I am 100% confident in Janish and that was $500K-$1M too much. This will now just give Dusty another chance to bench one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball for a veteran.
I'm tired of the geriatric signings.

I love Scott Rolen, but he was worn out in the second half of the season. These old guys wear down more easily.

I see him doing no better than Janish would have. And Janish was alot cheaper.
Baker: No quarterback controversy at short

Dusty Baker is glad to have Edgar Renteria on his roster. (The Reds still have not made the signing official.)

“It gives us a clutch man, a winner,” he said.

While Renteria reportedly told ESPNdeportes.com that he’s the Reds ‘full-time’ shortstop, Baker wasn’t willing to commit to that. Asked if he considered Renteria or Paul Janish the starter, Baker said:

“I don’t know. We don’t have a quarterback controversy at short. Everybody plays on my team. They’re both going to play. Janish is younger. Edgar is more experienced. Janish deserves a chance to be my shortstop.”

Baker likes having a pure shortstop as a backup.

“You’ve got to have two shortstops,” he said. “Both are capable.”

Baker spoke to Renteria Thursday.

“I’m happy to have him,” Baker said. “We’re trying to shore up our team. He and (Miguel) Cairo are tight. They can help the younger players.”

Baker plans to play Renteria at other position as well as shortstop. Renteria played one game at first base in majors, all his other appearances are at shortstop.

Renteria’s numbers of the last three years are similar to what Janish is capable of. Renteria’s last big year was 2007 when he hit .332/.390/.470 for Atlanta. His numbers since:

2008: .270/.317/.382

2009: .250/.307/.328

2010: .276/.332/.374

He was on the DL three times last year — once with a groin strain, once with a hamstring strain and once with a biceps strain.

His Ultimate Zone Range was 2.5 — that would have been the 12th best in the majors if he played enough to qualify. Orlando Cabrera was slightly better than that at 3.7.

Janish has done a good job and deserves his shot, but I'm still not fully convinced in his hitting. Adding Renteria at that price makes a lot of sense imo. Dusty always scares me, but hopefully he'll let them compete and play whoever deserves it.

IMHO, and that is all this is MHO, Dusty will not give Janish a chance to play full time. Hell he didn't want to play him last year when Cabrera was hurt. Dusty will always play whoever is paid the most, or is the oldest. They are still looking at Posednik, when he has Chris Heisey and can bring Nix back.

The only thing Posednik adds is his wife:

She is 40 years old.
And airbrushed like crazy.

Renteria is a good pickup. I wasn't sold on Rolen last year, but he turned out alright.
Reds management continues to address everything but our real weaknesses and needs.
