We are "ETSU"

The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called "ETSU" ... East Tennessee State in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU ... On TV graphics please use ETSU ... Our nickname is the Buccaneers, but Bucs is also acceptable.

Saw that on the website concerning the todays Northwestern game

poor directional school envy finally setting in at etsu...

$10 bucks says the next "tv" game will yeild at least one "Eastern Tennessee" and one "ET"
Northeastern probably wouldn't mind being referred to as Northwestern, but alas, they are still just Northeastern.
ETSU? Who's ETSU?
I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but I really liked the "East Tennessee" uni's that the Wadood/Fields teams wore, and prefer "East Tennessee" to "ETSU".
As most, if not all of our fans do.

I agree on the above about East Tennessee... ETSU could be East Texas, East Toledo, East Timbuctooooo... at least give us a geographic idea!!
East Tennessee is incomplete...just geography.
East Tennessee State tells you more...that taxpayers probably have something to do with it.
To know this is a school of higher education with a graduate school you need the University.
That's a lot of writing for the front of a jersey.
ETSU is good. This is one decision I think the executives got correct.

It is no longer confusing because East Texas State University no longer goes by that. If you type in ETSU on a web browser...you land on the one and only East Tennessee State University.

Going by initials is common. There are dozens of examples...like LSU. I think you know what that stands for!
Was there a discussion of a name change to East Tennessee University (ETU) back in the 70's?
I think there are good arguements to be made in favor of the different names. They all have some merit but right now I think our name is one of our lesser problems. We need some larger changes to improve things.
Yes...When Arthur DeRoiser was president he advocated all kinds of interesting ideas including changing the name of ETSU. His main idea was something to do with "The State of Franklin." It never received any traction. As I recall, he only lasted three years and off he went to who knows where. He passed away several years ago. He's the one who signed my diploma.
ETSU, as fan 1 pointed out, doesn't tell you a damn thing
When I talk about ETSU I generally simply use "State" and for that reason I have always been partial to the uniforms from the early 80's that simply read STATE. No that doesn't tell you much and likely isn't the best choice now but I always liked those uniforms.

They looked big time...like NC State's jersey which go by STATE.
My favorite was East Tennessee but I wouldn't be opposed to STATE if for no other reason it has historical presidence. But East Tennessee was my favorite.

Yes, DeRoiser was the one who moved ETSU into the SoCon, right? If my memory serves me right, he had big ambitions for ETSU - like visions of what East Carolina has accomplished. I believe he was run off over personal issues, not anything he was doing at the university. I believe that if he had stayed and completed his plans, ETSU would have accomplished probably more academically, especially attracting larger pools of undergraduate applicants and
be playing in a conference like C-USA today.
You are correct Buc 66. It does show you what could be done with a "catalyst." That's what DeRosier called himself...There are many definitions but the one I like best says this: an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action. ETSU needs that.

Stanton's job has been to stay on budget, grow the school and keep the medical program moving...adding pharmacy and now dental.

Phase 2 needs to be someone who can bring along the rest of the school including athletics which has suffered mightily under Stanton.

I believe a top performing athletic program will help the rest of the school and it's goals. There are many examples of this approach being successful. I don't know if this computes for the surgeon in charge.

Buc 66...your point about DeRosier is spot on...his reign was to short but it was nice hearing a president talking ambition. Can you imagine the Bucs making regular TV appearances and competing on the level as Murry's UAB or being a rival of Memphis? Even scheduling Tennessee like these teams have in football. Do you think that would change the image of ETSU? Do you think that would fulfill the best regional University in the nation idea? The answer is obvious.
