ETSU wants a dental school. I'm for it...but I'm also for football and that hasn't come back. What to do?

Have medical school graduates come through with contributions to the school? Is it breaking even or does it cost money just like football?
Let's kill the mens basketball team to have this dental school! YES, mein fuhrer! Let phase 2 begin!!

I think across the board that you see very little giving from Med School grads to that institution, I'm sure there is "some" but I'd venture a guess that they are more likely to be "loyal" to an undergraduate institution where there was some sense of community and loyalty being developed from an "alumni in residence" philosophy.

Dental care is very needed in this area, I have no problem with it... as long as they have to pay the restricted student fee for athletics too...
I once heard from a university employee that the med school will never pay for itself...
Dental school plus football team. Both are needed and both can be done. Let's do both.

Does the English Dept. pay for itself? Mathematics?

The ultimate point is.........does a particular program serve the world, or society at large, in the long run. Does the U.S. Army "pay for itself"?

What if one of the research professors in the med school finds a way to 'cure' diabetes? (not far-fetched) The repercussions of that would be felt world-wide, but it may not financially benefit the school to a significant degree (although it could, too). How do you measure that?

My point is, and I hope you see it, that your statement is nonsensical.
To refresh an earlier point on this board from over two years ago....

If stanton had had a large, publicity-splashed fund-raising campaign for football like he did for the pharmacy school, we wouldn't be having this discussion. He has obfuscated (really, prevaricated) the truth about the so-called fund-raising program that only raised, what was it, $55,000 over 3 years? 5 years? (Those are approximations from memory.) Yet the area as a whole raised millions in a few months for the pharmacy school - mostly because he got behind it, publicized it, squeezed a few people gently, etc. And we earlier discussed how much money Tulane raised in what was it, a week, to save football there about 3-4 years ago.....

THERE WAS NO *REAL* FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN TO SAVE FOOTBALL. ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE IS SIMPLY MISLEADING YOU AT BEST. Virtually no one (not even the head of the Pirate Club, Jo Ann Paty), knew football was close to being cut.

The fact is - yes - we *can* have a medical school, a pharmacy school, an dental school, AND a football team - but the president of the university has to also believe that, and act in a manner so demonstrating. He has not - and will not......

Amen!
East Tennessee State University has appointed a special committee to study the feasibility of establishing a dental school.

Let's just rename the old girl "The Medical College of East Tennessee" and hope nobody notices that teacher education is an afterthought... I'm sure the "founding fathers" never saw this coming...

MTSU is in the same boat...their primary mission to produce teachers is also just a sidebar in what has become a mammoth University of thirty-thousand.

I'm amazed ETSU and MTSU haven't had any sort of joint anniversary celebration... Much more, how these schools (who are governed by the same board of regents) don't even seem to talk to one another. They sure have forgotten to compete against one another athletically. What ever it is...it's petty and not in the interest of either school. I sure wish we were in the same conference again...MTSU is now big time...and ETSU has gone backwards athletically. Schools like MTSU and ETSU need to work together, support one another...afterall, they get their state monies from the same state government. Both schools given the same mission, started the same year and now it seems they couldn't be further apart. If I'm governor Haslam... I'm going to have a talk with these guys.
