The way ETSU basketball is going...I need a diversion. I turn to ETSU history. Golf is the game...Larry Hinson is his name.

Athletically…ETSU’s claim to fame has to be its golf game. Proof is national rankings. Somewhere in the top 20 you normally see the Bucs. The golf dynasty began long before super golf coach Fred Warren was on the scene… there was ETSU golf established by
an ETSU alumnus. Hal Morrison was ETSU’s version of Deion Sanders…only more versatile. He played three sports, Deion only two…From 1950 to 1953 Morrison was ETSU’s Mr. Everything in basketball, baseball and football. He became ETSU’s first All-American in football in 1953. If that isn’t versatile enough, Morrison returned to ETSU in 1955 as the Buccaneer golf coach and led the Bucs for over 25 years, until 1983. His record includes six NCAA Tournament berths and coached 15 All-Americans, including fellow Hall-of-Famers Bobby Watkins, Mike Hulbert and J.C. Snead...although Snead's main game was baseball.

This is not a story about Morrison. It’s all about almost 70 year old Larry Hinson. Today he's the pro at Hinson Hills, an 18-hole executive course he designed in Douglas, Georgia. After his collegiate career (South Georgia College and East Tennessee State) Hinson had 30 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.

To get a tad of understanding of how successful this guy was...look at the career money list compared to number 1 Tiger Woods....

1 Tiger Woods $94,157,304
2 Vijay Singh $63,320,389

471 Larry Hinson $413,284

This was late 60s early 1970s prize money...so not bad. He played in several majors including the 1969 PGA... Here are the scores and the prize money...

Harold Henning 74-73-70-74--291 $512
LARRY HINSON 75-74-70-72--291 $512

Hinson is in the Georgia Hall of Fame alongside players like Bobby Jones...ever heard of him? He helped design Augusta National and helped establish the Masters Tournament.

Hinson was an All-American at East Tennessee State, and a medalist in the 1967 NCAA College Division (II) Championship.

He played on the PGA Tour for nine years (with one win) and played in the Masters Tournament from 1970-72.

Based on the ranking system used by the PGA Tour in 1970, Hinson was the second-best golfer on the world's top tour.

As I recall, he used to come back to ETSU to host golf fund raisers with Morrison's PGA players including Bobby Wadkins.

When I think of the greatest Bucs of all time...I think of Morrison and people like Hinson. They made things happen before the era of big money athletics. They stayed loyal and true to ETSU.
Attendance at an ETSU golf match: 0

Sorry, I'll take basketball any day. And lets not get crazy. The team isn't in the tank just yet.

You missed the point. The posting wasn't about golf...it was about faithfulness to ETSU...and a little history for the young pups who never heard of these great Bucs. Come on!
