Well, it sure as heck surprised me!
... and yet somehow we will receive no credit for this, but rather scrutiny.
That depends on how we do in the higher profile bowl games...
We get little/no credit because half of our wins during the 16-6 run have come against non-AQ teams. No one in the Big 12 or SEC is impressed when USF beats Memphis in the Beef Bowl.

Sadly, that obscures the fact that since the big changes of 2004, even tossing out those 8 wins against non-AQ, we are still 8-6 against AQ competition, and 3-3 in BCS bowls, both of which are quite respectable and better than some of the other AQ conferences.

Good pts on both accounts...

Plus, a Big East Team hasn't played in a BCS Title Game since the conf was reformed...so that is a slight dig at the Big East as well.

Get back to a BCS Championship Game...get a 2nd team added to a BCS Bowl...and the Big East reputation would begin to rise.
The fact that many of our bowl games are lower level bowls isn't our fault. We can only play in those bowls that invite us...

Actually, bowl organizations (and TV networks) might disagree with you as most bowl agreements are based on popularity of conferences and those that with best traveling fan bases (which many times are some of the best teams in the country) end up with the best TV slots and bowl contracts.
All that matters for us is doing well in the games we're given...

True and false. True, in the sense that in the here-and-now, well, yes, there's nothing for us to do but win the games that we are scheduled to play.

But false in the sense that if we are playing nothing but lower-tier bowls every year, our reputation will not be helped much, if at all, by winning them, and since our reputation matters, that's a cause of concern.

So in the longer run, we have to build up the strength of our programs/conference so as to be more attractive to the higher-profile bowls. When the Gator dumps our #2 in favor of the BigTin #4 and SEC #6, while boosting its payout by $250k, that's a problem.
Next season starts in the bowl games. All The BEast needs to do is win. If we win, eventually all our problems will be solved...

Winning brings fans, exposure, $$$, and everything else that The BEast presently desires. Success will cure all our ills...
