It was interesting to me because I was there the home game that is .. the thumping NIU gave the then #24 Bulldogs. In '91 of course they repaid the thumping.. I was not in attendance of that game but was still a student at NIU. Aww the memories...

yes the game has been revisited here nearer to anniversary date in october. I take partial credit for raising the occasion here.

yes I was in attendance with my wife and her girlfriend. Temps in upper 60's to low 70's and a sky as crisp blue as a saphire.

It was indeed an amazing and somewhat bizzare NIU football game for the Ages. I swore afterwords that fresno had apparently never seen nor practiced for NIU's bone.
Have a tape of the game with the open mike during commercials Fresno feed. Best comment was by the Fresno announcers " They don't have a clue on how to stop this offense."
That's a great article. If you didn't read it, take a look at it. Specially if you remember Stacey Robinson and what he did that day! If Pettibone didn't take him out so early he might have had 700 yards that game!

I have shared this before, but Pettibone asked a couple of us at half time what to tell the team. I told him to say keep doing what they are doing. He smiled for about 3 seconds, and then went back to the disbelief on his face of what was happening on the field. We had some very special teams back then. I have a lot of respect for all my teammates, great guys…..
What a crazy ass day that was.

Several ugly mugs to choose from but only one numbered 96.
I played on the NIU rugby team at the time. We were driving home from a game downtown (we beat Notre Dame!) and caught a few words from the NIU announcers on the radio 56-10 (or something like that) is all we heard. We assumed NIU was taking it in the poop shoot.

My teammate and I decided to pull into the stadium anyway and catch the last quarter. We were totally surprised to see NIU on top, saw the goalposts go, team sang the fight song on the field. Good stuff (and I only weighed 190lbs at the time, talk about the salad days!)

I was about 12 years old and was just starting to follow the Bulldogs. The Dog's being ranked in the top 25 was a big deal. I watched the demolition on the local station that was carrying the game. The loss was unexpected to say the least.
If outcome was unexpected by Fresno fans, it was equally unexpected by Huskie fans and remains a bit of a cult mystery to understand how and why it happened.

How did Fresno finish the remainder of the 1990 season?

Huskies finished 6-5 including a W vrs a weak Kansas State team.
Yep, like it was yesterday, one of my top 5 all time games.
I was there in the north end zone watching as a Sophomore... man, what a game that was! I rushed the field as well! (Only a 4' chain link fence is I remember correctly...)

I looked it up. The Dogs finished 9-2-1. The game after the Northern Illinois game was the tie (Utah State) and their only other loss was a 42-7 beat down at the hand of San Jose State.

My oh my how times change and how they stay the same. Here we are 25 yrs later facing one another on a neutral site in a bowl game. Just think of the many programs no longer in existence since 1990 or relegated to obscurity including Cal State Fullerton from 1983 bowl vs NIU.

San Jose State? Were those years their golden era of football? I cannot quite remember the name of the coach whose name is plastered around SJSU city stadium when we played Troy in 2004 bowl game.
