which made it to our board...take it for what its worth

I suppose I can post this now since this is all about to come out. Truth is I had heard from my source in Providence last week that BE expansion to 12 and 20 was, to put it in his words, "A done deal" and UH was definately going to get an invite. I didn't post this from obvious reasons, because I wasn;t ready to own the rumor, and I've been around long enough to know that NOTHING is a "done deal".

The BE Commish went into the meeting with the support of 9 of 16 (with two BB only members, neither of which was Villanova) BE members to go to a 12-20 format, and all indication was that he and the FB Commish were willing to play hardball to push this thru. Key to making this happen was that the 20 team BB format would have included an auto-bid to the NCAA for each 10 team division, that is what swayed the two BB only members to go on-board. Appearently this had all been worked out.....

The reason they were doing this was because TCU had been playing hard ball and was insisting on full membership. Just before the meeting word had come in that TCU would likely entertain a FB only membership, but would prefer that the BE extend an invitation for full membership, which they will likely decline, for cost reasons. This after the BE started playing a little hard ball back saying that if TCU was going to insist that they be extended full membership that they would just go ahead and invite UCF, who has already agreed to this.

In the meeting, Nova pleaded it's case and appearently got some sympathy from the current BE members. They stated that they are NOT ready to jump now, and that it would cost them too much to jump next year. They re-affirmed their commitment to go to BCS, but they would not be ready for 2-3 years.

So the BE members decided to go ahead with expanison to 10 teams, with a plan to go to 12 when Nova is ready to jump. By then they will have worked out the details of a potenial 20 team BB confernce... and push this forward and will worry about it later. The BB only members LOVE this compromise, and the FB only members are 'satisfied'.

So will it be TCU and UCF?..... the smart money says yes. But UH does have some support form BE FB only members and they are the programs that you might expect (namely WVU and USF), and this is not a 'done deal'. They still need to consider the ramifications of any new media deal that they can negociate. Access to recuiting markets is a factor, but many BE teams look at Florida as a pretty good market as well, adding another team in Florida has some value as well as adding another team in Texas. If the BE believes that it can negociate a favorable media deal by coming into Houston, then our stock goes up. We'll just have to see, regardless the BE will be expanding to 12 teams in a couple of years and we would likely be the top target when this happens.
Interesting. Fits those "Nova as the 11th FB member" rumors.

Not sure if its true, but interesting.

So it sounds like right now it's TCU, UCF, Houston and Nova in the next four years, they just aren't sure which two of the three (UCF, TCU, UH) to bring in first for 2012...

Is that an accurate summary?
One problem with this Jackson... Those four programs (TCU, UCF, UH and Nova) would lead to 12/19 NOT 12/20, is there any explanation for that discrepancy in this story?
Very interesting. I prefer ECU and would love to have Memphis but UCF has a quality football team and their dedication to their facilities and athletics are second to none so that is nice. I also think that Houston is a sleeper coup. Please expand to 12/19 or 12/20!

Good point. I'd assume they'd add another basketball school to make the bb side happy.
add memphis as bb only for 20? guess that would work
also why not just add all 3 now then let villnova be 12? let whoever is gonna be 11 get a jump in the game now then waiting till later
This does line up with this rumor from earlier this week:

Quote:Rumor on BIG EAST expansion & it includes a pair of C-USA schools...tifwiw

The rumor is the 2 schools being mention do not really include Villanova. Nova will have to decide by December if they move up but will not be available to the conference until 2014 and would be the 11th member.

TCU is the foregone conclusion school and it is down to either UCF or Houston for the final spot. Again just a rumor so take it for what it worth.

Agreed. Invite TCU, Central Florida, and Houston. Give Nova an opportunity to become #12, but set measurable targets it has to meet along the way. If it doesn't meet them, then invite ECU as #12.
I'm not following... so the big east will extend two all sports offers or football-only? tcu would only accept all-sports? ucf would accept football only (which I doubt)?

I think they don't want to go to 11 and have to leave someone out of the yearly schedule like the Big ten does.

I've heard rumors that they want to do to a 9 game conference schedule, which is why adding two makes sense.

Then, when Nova is ready, you add them and the 12th member, split into divisions, done!
Uh's president came from USF and has good relationship with USF's president. No doubt they will get USF's support.
Houston could move up and join TCU in 2012, if the Frogs want an instate league team.
I think they only want FB only for now. When the contract expires, everyone will get in as full membership because obviously it pays more. I don't think BB schools want to cut their small pie for TCU/UCF/ECU because they don't bring value to that conference.

The first wave must be FB only. Second wave of expansion... everyone will be full members.

I guess they also want 2 10 team conference.... and the two conference will meet with each other for the BEast Tournament at MSG.

It sure does lol...just a tidbit I heard a couple of days ago...still just a rumor so anything is possible.

If they are going to go to 12/20 or 12/19, then why not just start with 12/18 in 2012 and then go to 12/19 + 1 BB only or 12/20 in 2014?

It makes no sense to leave an entire programs non-FB sports stranded for only 2 years... what conference is going to want to take someone non-FB sports for only 2 years? That makes ZERO sense...
Do you really think the NCAA would allow any conference two auto-bids in basketball? I don't see that happening.
If nova is joining they cant really join until 2014 so that 12th school would probably be added for that year also. No need to go to 11 in 2012. Im sure if thats the way it happens then that 12th team wouldnt be announced until 2012.
I think if Nova says that they will move up the league could go with TCU and UH for 2012 and then UCF with Nova in 2014 with a nother nonfootball member joining in 2014 for that 12/20 look

It doesn't make sense at all that they only want FB only. But I think that is probably one of the compromises that FB schools had with BB schools. FB only for 2 years until the new contract and then we can divide equally. Right now, there is just too many people at the dinner table.

Look, FB wants more schools... and I'm sure BB schools didn't just bend over backwards and say, "Okay, we got your back". It's more like.. lets make a deal.

BTW, this is not a rumor, I do not know anyone in the inside.... its more of a guess than anything else.

Weren't people claiming it was "plausible" for the Pac-16 to get two BCS bids just a few months ago?
