As a defense mechanism for having all the joy for my favorite sport sucked out of me by my favorite team, I will go to future games to hang out and have fun, with zero expectations of success.

In short, I've become a Cubs fan.

Last night, some well-meaning gump slapped me on the back and said, "You almost got 'em".

Rather than obeying my first impulse, punching him in the face, I just rolled my eyes and replied, "Yeah, we almost get a lot of people."

*sigh*
Take heart, sir. It can happen, and it is sweet when it does. I was at Houston for Ware's Heisman year. I saw Akeem and Drexler and the Coogs go to the Final Four three years in a row.

Hell, even Tulane had an undefeated year!

We can at least master a winning season and enjoy more tailgates. Is that too much to ask?

Jesus, a Cub fan? You really have been beaten into masochism. You ever hear Steve Goodman's "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request"?
Maybe I should extend my post-heartbreaking loss posting moratorium from 24 hours to 48.
I had never thought about it until you mentioned it but we really are Cubs fans. D*mn.

I try to differentiate my knee-jerk rants from my thought out responses.

It's what separates me from your common poster. 03-lmfao

Steve Goodman (who, by he way, sung this at Wrigley while he was dying of cancer.)

By the shore's of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
'Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head the put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them "its late and its getting dark in here"
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
There's just one thing I'd like to know

(Chorus, sung)
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the national league

(talking blues)
Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can."
That's what it says.
"But the year the Cubs last won a national league pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that's the truth)

I'd forsake my teacher's
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy
and then one thing led to another
soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacross, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boys hope
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.
Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for pigeons beneath the "EL" track to eat

He said "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore
before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I'll read you my last request
Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the National Anthem
and then a little "na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye"
Make six bull pen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!

Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Kieth Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I'll be ready to die
Build a big fire on home plate out of your 'Louisville Sluggers' baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in the beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour south west wind
When my last remaind go flying over the left field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums adieu
I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue

The dying man's friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that's an awful shame
He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I'm going to do
He said but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!
And he said "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
The one I like the best
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub fan's last request

(Chorus, big finish, sung)
Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue

I can't coach the team. I can't run, throw or catch the ball in the game. All I can do is cheer, fraternize and eat with fellow Blazer fans at the game. I do what I can do. GO BLAZERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!! I would like for the Cubs to win a World Series in my lifetime as well now that the Red Sox have won one as well.

I live in your world to. Cubs fan, Bears fan, and Blazer fan. It really sucks when the Bears lose on the same weekend that UAB loses. Oh go Blackhawks!
I thought it was a cute song, Lou.
Ya know, I like underdogs, so I'm only a Cubs fan when they're losing... I guess I'm always a Cubs fan :-p

If the Saints can do it... That's what I keep telling myself.

Hey it could be worse, you could be a Dolphins fan and have had your heart ripped out twice in less than 24 hours thanks to the refs. Stupid Steelers......

He doesn't mean he actually likes the Cubs baseball team, he means he has decided that he is going to go to UAB games and enjoy watching the Blazers play just because he loves UAB with no real expectations of winning regularly. I have been in this boat for a few years now. Some may criticize us for this outlook, but the games are a lot more fun to watch this way.

I've kicked that one around for a whole day now. If the 'Fins did recover the ball, and I believe they did, they get the ball on the 20. The Steelers still have 3 timeouts, and 2:30 left. The 'Fins would run on 1st & 2nd, and be forced to throw on 3rd still with 2:00 on the clock. ... Anyway cutting to the chase, I believe the Steelers would still have gotten a shot at a FG to win, even if the Dolphins had been given the ball.

Oh, and thanks for the W. Go Steelers.
I know about as much about the personnel of the Cubs as any other baseball team. They have the status of being a "cult object" like some movies or Elvira. The Blazers, on the other hand, is a team I actually care about and want good things to happen to them. I want them to improve each season and move toward winning regularly. I am pleased in that we have looked better in most of our games this year and have come very close to winning all but one that we lost. I can see the sunrise from here right now. (Now if we go to USM and get hammered 70-anything, I will wonder why I wrote that.) We CAN win EVERY game left on our schedule and I'm hopeful we will. GO BLAZERS!!!!!!!!!!
I am not resigned to my fate.

I am resigned to Neil CallAWAY's if he doesn't win out.

That is all.

Win in Hattiesburg or announce.

Last year's win over USM looked a lot like a bona fide. But it wasn't.
