Our buddy Dwayne from Minden mentioned on the Tech board that both North Texas and the Cajuns were offered yesterday by Benson (WAC), and both declined.

Not sure of the validity of the offer; but thought it was interesting nonetheless.
Good choice by them. WAC would definitely be a step down.

Since that is my post I will expand as I did there. This was the 2nd time inside a week that I had heard NT and the Cajuns mentioned. The other was last week from a friend of mine that is a HC at UTSA. Said he had heard the 2 schools mentioned WRT WAC membership and just wanted my opinion as a Cajun fan. Told him then that I didn't think we would accept, and why. Today's post by DFM just "confirms" that there have been discussions, regardless of how minimal. And just as before, you will never hear an official declining membership note from either school, since there will never be an "official" invite.

And this could come around again, and again.........as the WAC continues to figure out ways to survive, and thrive. Per the SLC Tribune...."Benson left open the possibility that other prospective members “could come back into play” if there’s another round of conference realignment."
Not sure what Benson thought they would be offering them at this point.
If the WAC cant get anything but FCS to move up, I cant imagine that its not going to be pretty over there.

If Hawaii goes Indy and moves its other sports to the Big West, does that pretty much slam the door on the WAC?

Now what I do find to be a RADICAL shift in perception is that it seems all of the Tech fans now agree that the WAC will not be worth staying in. Almost to a man they agreed that UL and UNT would be fools to join the WAC now.

If the CUSA lifeboat that so many LA Tech fans are praying for doesnt show up, (and I dont think it will unless there is other confrence shifting) will LA Tech look to return to the 'Belt?

I haven't seen any threads from Loser Tech about them turning down a SBC invite.....because there's not been one.....and I doubt that will change anytime soon.

I have heard that there are some SBC teams blocking them, at this time. How much of that is true, I do not know. I now don't think it is MT who is doing the "blocking".

Not sure if this was just preliminary voting, and if LaTech had showed any interest.

ULM is not part of any blocking at this time. A serious thought to offer Tech would have to be presented first and it hasn't been...and even then I'm not sure ULM would really block them. Having them in the SBC would be the only way to force them to play schools they currently refuse to play (and it's not just ULM). Any blocking of Tech to the SBC would probably begin at the SBC office in New Orleans since they were the ones originally shafted by the bullpups. Tech would have a lot of kissing up to do.

As to UNT and ULL being talked about, they had been considered before and Benson was just going back thru his old rolodex to see who he could call.

Might have been a last ditch effort to revive the EWAC.

Tech
ULL
UNT
UTSa
TS
NMSU

They could then add Montana

Montana
USU
Idaho
San Jose
Hawai

I can promise there is not a radical shift in thinking. The more vocal anti-belt folks just have not chimed in yet.

Most Tech fans agree that the WAC without Boise, Fresno, and Nevada is just a shell of its former self. If Fresno and Nevada remained, then it is a different arguement.

These same Tech fans, myself included, have nothing against UNT, Ark State or ULL.
From a post by NT80 on gomeangreen.com

AC reception desk: "RV, Commish Benson of the WAC is on the phone". RV: "Tell him NO !".

I just hope the WAC never contacts us. Dean Lee might be dumb enough to accept

uhh maybe that we're several hundred miles from the closest league member
No Belt team wants to be in the WAC. They probably knew better than to ask. This is getting to be embarrassing for the WAC. Turned down again.

If those three schools join, which looks highly likely, it will be a tight little conference. No better No worse than the belt. Actually the power rating of this conference will still be higher than the belt. Montana is going to be the school that saves the WAC. Benson is probably praying they say yes

The power rating is slightly higher now... what happens when Montana, and Texas State start losing to FBS teams? Not to mention UTSA which will be worse because they are starting from scratch. All of those have potential, but they are going to take time.

"Power" ratings are based on wins and losses as well as opponents' wins and losses. Those three will be much lower when they start losing, and the existing WAC teams will be much lower for having played them.

I hear over and over how bad the Sunbelt sucks. You know why the Sunbelt "sucks"? Because we were forced to take a bunch of upstarts that had to rush through thier transition.

Just like you are about to. Think about it.
